Impressionist Paintings - An Overview - By: Charli Jhonson

Impressionist paintings date back to well over a century. It is something that Monet actually begun with his painting Impression, Sunrise. A critic coined the term and in no time it became a form of painting that many artists have done over the past century.

Impressionist painting involves allowing your audience to see the painting in the same way that you see it. You will find that they are able to give off the impression of light in a way that gives the painting so much more depth than a regular painting normally has.
This form of painting is something that has inspired many artists to attempt to do the same. The secret is short brushstrokes as it is something that helps give the illusion of light and helps the audience to see the painting in a whole new way. One of the brilliant things about impressionist paintings is that people will often find themselves taking a second or a third glance, thinking that perhaps they missed something in the first look. People love to look at these paintings because of how life like and real they look.

Impressionist paintings can be of anything. However, they are more often than not taken of things that are outside. This is because it gives the artist so much more to play with with the light and depth of the overall painting. You will notice that when the paintings take place inside that the subject themselves have light and shadows cast upon them in several different layers. This is a much easier task to be done whenever the painting is done outside.

The Paris based artists that began to paint impressionist painting back in the 19th century were considered radicals of their time. No one thought to paint this way and it was unheard of to give a painting such depth and light. The painters found that it was all about the visual effects of the painting as opposed to the actual details of the subject. They did not allow themselves to get lost on the subject matter of the painting. They instead focused on the lighting aspect of their work. Being able to portray such depth and light has helped to make an entire genre of painting that is still being used today.

People study this type of painting in school and many artists try to bring this type of painting to a whole new level. It is all about how you yourself see the subject and how you want your audience to see it. This is the greatest part of the process of impressionist work, the ability to allow people to see your work through your eyes.

Thanks to artists such as Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt and Gustave Caillebotte who have helped to mold the overall appeal of the impressionist movement we are able to appreciate it still to this day. People from all over the world love and appreciate the beauty that true Impressionist Paintings can bring to any subject.
