Getting proper health care, having regular check-ups and essentially maintaining your overall health is the best way to live. We can ensure a long and healthy life just by adopting a few good habits and continuing them.

However there are some important facts about human health that we should know and follow. For example a balanced diet is one that minimizes artificial trans fat in the body, includes a small amount of saturated fats for flavor and concentrates more on the unsaturated fats which are found in vegetable oils, seeds, nuts and fish. Unsaturated fats provide numerous health benefits. On the other hand saturated fats which are mostly concentrated in animal products and dairy products are solid fats that can raise our LDL cholesterol, and increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Saturated fats also damage our arteries. Consequently, the American Heart Association advises limited intake of saturated fats to less than 7% of the total calorie intake, which is equivalent to 15 gm for a person taking 2000 calorie per day diet. It is easy to maintain a low level of saturated fats in our diets. We just need to stay away from high fat content dairy products, limit our intake of red meat and control our meat share. Most importantly it is essential to stay away from greasy and fried food since they are full of saturated fats.

Water accounts for more than 70% of our body weight. It is the most abundant and most important element in the world. Our bodies need to be hydrated in order for us to maintain our energy levels and overall health. It is the necessity of life. The quality of the water we drink directly affects our health. However the brain, especially the cerebral cortex is not able to rest in this state but remains semi-alert. Sleep-deprivation can lead to a number of conditions and disorders. It affects our learning and memory, our metabolism, our overall mood, and alters our immune system. Sleep disorders also lead to stress and irregular heartbeats. A person without much sleep tends to have increased stress levels, hormone levels and hypertension. Chronic stress can then lead to a number of conditions and diseases like headaches, a stiff neck or tight shoulders, backache, rapid heartbeat, sweating, and even an upset stomach, diarrhea or nausea. A person can reduce stress by getting a good night’s sleep and time management.
