Identifying and Fixing Runtime Errors - By: Ms Mindy Matter

When you first get a new computer, there is generally complete and utter joy. This is not just because you have a new toy to play with, but also because feel assured that your new computer will have no problems with it that you will have to deal with . . . yet. When you have a brand new computer, there are no viruses that have yet invaded the computer, nor are there any errors that will pop-up to annoy you.

One common problem is a runtime error. A runtime error is something that almost every computer owner has experienced at least once. You would think that because this problem seems to be so prevalent, computer programmers could find a way to eradicate it, or that the average computer user would quickly learn how to fix it; that is not the case. These problems have actually occurred more and more frequently as the newer versions of Windows have been created. And what’s interesting is that many people don’t truly know what the phrase “runtime error” actually means.

What Is A Runtime Error?

When you get the phrase “runtime error” on your computer, what your computer is basically telling you is that one of the applications operating on it has encountered a problem. There is something similar called a “compile time error” that many people confuse with a runtime error. A compile time error occurs before you turn the program on, or when you’re in the process of turning the program on. If the program is already running when you receive the runtime error message, you have a runtime error, not a compile time error. The difficult part of fixing a runtime error is that you first need to identify what part of the program the computer is having difficulty with.

Diagnosing Runtime Errors

One thing that is great about computers is that they can give us so much information. Similar to how a mechanic can now hook a machine up to your vehicle to help identify the problem, so, too, computers can give us information about what is wrong with them. When you see the runtime error message, you’ll also be given a code. The code that accompanies the runtime error is what will help you determine what is going on with your computer, so make sure that you write down the code when you see it. It is also a good idea to write down what programs you currently have running on your computer so that you will have a better idea which program is causing the problem.

Fixing Runtime Error Messages

When you find that you have a runtime error on your computer, the first action you should take is to try to figure out exactly what the error stems from. The easiest way to complete this task is to type in “runtime error” and then the code that you also wrote down in a search engine. This should help you to identify the problem. One thing you need to be aware of is that there are many different runtime errors that you could get, and not all of them can be fixed in the same way. That is one of the most frustrating aspects about receiving a runtime error – the only way that it can be fixed is to have a great deal of detailed information and using various tools to fix it. Many computer owners find that it is a very time-consuming task to determine what is causing the runtime error and to figure out how to get rid of the problem. This is one reason why they tend to look for complete programs that can help them to get rid of the problem instead of trying to pinpoint the exact problem every time one occurs.

Quite often one of the most common problems is that the registry file that your computer is looking for is there, but the software can’t figure out where to find it. This often happens if there is a virus or some sort of malware on the system that is making it difficult for the computer to do its job properly. If you find that this is a problem, your anti-virus software should help you to fix the problem. Make sure that you keep your anti-virus software updated, however, so that you can be ensure that you have the latest information needed to get rid of the virus.

If you’ve tried everything you can think of to fix the problem, but have not been able to fix the runtime error, it may be time to seek professional help. A technician who is familiar with computers should have a fairly easy time figuring out where the runtime error is and how they can get it fixed for you. This could save a great deal of frustration on your part.
