Ideas for Volunteer Holidays - By: Mark Angelo

Many people choose to volunteer during the holiday season, as a way of celebrating the spirit of giving and charity. Volunteering can help you gain a greater appreciation for the things you have and the satisfaction that comes from helping those in need. Organizations like Volunteer Fairfax work to compile a wide range of volunteer opportunities in the county of Fairfax during the holiday season.

There are volunteer activities to suit a range of interests and schedules, and volunteer service during the holidays is always needed and appreciated. For example, in the city of Alexandria there are volunteer opportunities available with Pathway Homes. They are looking for people who have beautician skills such as makeup, hair styling and nail painting to help shelter residents look and feel beautiful for the holidays.

In the city of Raleigh, North Carolina there are also many opportunities for volunteering during the holidays. Volunteers are needed at the Raleigh Rescue Mission to help change lives this season. It is advised to sign up early for these opportunities as positions tend to fill quickly. One of the volunteer positions available at the Rescue Mission is a holiday meal host for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Meal hosts help to serve up to 100 people during each meal, and groups of volunteers are welcome to sign up to work together as meal hosts. Whether you are part of a family, corporate group or church group, you are invited to volunteer your time to help serve up to 3 meals daily at the Rescue Mission. Meal host groups also shop for food, prepare it, serve and clean up after the meal.

Some ideas for volunteer holidays in Portland, Oregon are listed on the Hands on Portland website. Many of these projects are short term in nature, lasting between 2 to 4 hours and benefiting some of the most important non profits in the community. Many of these projects need large numbers of volunteers to help out with special events.

For example, the School Supplies for Kids project is hands on volunteer project that is appropriate for volunteers age 12 and up. This project organizes a group of volunteers for a one day project, and there is no special training or long term commitment required. Volunteers will help Schoolhouse Supplies to collect basic school supplies which will be given to Portland area public school teachers.
