Ideas For Overcoming Fear and Worry - By: Mike Zid

You no doubt start getting a tight, queezy feeling in the pit of your stomach, your chest my even start hurting, and you can feel your heart start to race. You will notice that you irritable, nervous, probably having trouble concentrating on anything. Getting to sleep at night is an issue for you or you wake up in the wee hours of the morning and your finances is the first thing your mind goes to.

Instead of allowing your mind to run wild with anxiety, it will be to your advantage to begin doing some things that will decrease the amount of worrying that you do. Believe it or not, you can short-circuit the worry cycle and begin getting a handle on your runaway anxiety.

One method for doing this is to have a specified "worry time" during the day or evening in which you set aside a specific period of time in which you are free to worry like crazy. At other times during the day, when fear, worries, and anxiety start to enter your mind, you remind yourself that you will save all this up for later in the day. It ends up being a neat little mental trick that gets you to get your mind off your worries and focused on other more pertinent things....like your work or whatever the task at hand might be.

I recommend giving yourself anywhere from 15-20 minutes during the day to fret and stew to your hearts content. I don't recommend doing this in the late evening however. During this time, allow yourself to fully experience whatever feelings of worry and anxiety you might have. Don't hold it back or try to bottle it in. This is your time to worry. As I said earlier, if you start worrying at other times of the day, simply remind yourself to put whatever it is that is bothering you, on your "worry list" for later. All you are really doing is simply developing the skill of postponing your worries.

After your worry period is over....it's over! Allow it to go bye-bye for another day and then you can worry some more about it then. This may sound kind of simple and you may have doubts that it would work, but many have found that it is quite effective. It also breaks the mental cycle of "worrying about worrying", which happens so often and ends up making us feel like failures.

Compartmentalizing your worries and fears like this, will help you stay more upbeat and productive during the day and it will do wonders for your self-esteem because you begin to realize that you can control your fears. Not to mention what it does for your ulcers, headaches, heart palpitations and etc. Another added benefit to this approach is that you may often find yourself being more productive and creative at other tasks because you are now able to give them your full attention.

Start making out your list of things to focus on during a "worry period." Feel free to add things to the list during the day as they come up, but postpone dealing with the issues until worry time. Try this technique of overcoming worry and anxiety and see if you don't start to feel better, with a noticeable improvement in your ability to handle life's problems.
