The Indian Premier League is a professional league for Twenty20 cricket competition in India. It was initiated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and is supervised by BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla, who serves as the league's Chairman and Commissioner.
The fifth season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), comprising nine teams and 76 matches, will begin and end in Chennai, with the opening match on April 4 and the final on May 27. The teams will play each other at home and away during a league phase consisting of 72 games at 12, possibly 13, venues, beginning with the defending champions Chennai Super Kings playing Champions League T20 winners Mumbai Indians.
IPL 5 player auction will be held on February 4 next month at Bangalore's ITC Royal Gardenia Hotel. Richard Madley, a renowned auctioneer from England and who has already overseen the previous auctions, will once again be in charge of the proceedings. As many as 144 players will be part of this auction including Indian Test batsman VVS Laxman, pacer S Sreesanth and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
Inducted as an injury replacement last year, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been retained by Pune Warriors for IPL 2012. Ganguly had signed up with the outfit after the start of the tournament last year. He had been a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the first three editions of the T20 event and had leaded the side in 2008 and 2010. Royal Challengers Bangalore have signed Chris Gayle, former West Indies captain, for the next two IPL seasons. Gayle joined RCB for the 2011 IPL as a replacement for Dirk Nannes. He was the recipient of the Orange Cap for being the highest scorer in IPL 2011. He also played for RCB in the CLT20 2011. He was a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders in the first three editions of the IPL. England's middle-order mainstay Kevin Pietersen is set to move from Deccan Chargers to Delhi Daredevils. Pietersen was excited at the prospect of joining a team that includes the likes of skipper Virender Sehwag and David Warner. Elsewhere, Kings XI Punjab have signed David Miller, the middle-order batsman from South Africa, for the next two seasons.

In its short but eventful life, the IPL T20, with its combination of cricket and entertainment, has resembled an unstoppable juggernaut. Above all, it has been television-ratings gold, attracting a wide audience, including women and children, that has mostly ignored the longer versions of the game. Even film ticket sales dropped in its wake, with production houses choosing to withhold new releases until after the IPL. Its domination was total, and it seemed like nothing could slow it down. The 2011 IPL produced the lowest television ratings of any of the four seasons, an average Television Viewer Rating (TVR) of 3.91 per game, down 29% from 5.51 a year ago. Even the final, which pitted the defending champions, Chennai Super Kings, against Royal Challengers Bangalore, failed to draw the bumper ratings of years past, despite the presence of India's captain, MS Dhoni, and Chris Gayle, this season's most explosive and exciting player. Their contest drew a TVR of 6.96, healthy by normal standards but pale in comparison to the 12.85 rating in 2010.
