Journalism is the profession of reporting, photographing and editing news stories for one of the media. Journalism can be an exciting career for those who loves gathering, reporting, and analyzing information and putting it in a format that is understood by others. It is a tough competitive field that has changed dramatically over the last few years and is expected to continue changing as new technology is introduced. Careers in journalism require people who are independent, flexible, and creative and should be highly innovative. To be able to capture that next breaking news story, a journalist should be aggressive and passionate. Some media companies also require fluency in a foreign language.
Working in the field of journalism requires excellent word-processing skills along with computer graphics and desktop-publishing skills that are also useful. Also photography skills are needed since many entry-level positions demands both the responsibilities of reporter and photographer.
To carry out the journalism internship at television stations and daily newspapers would provide you with a real-world experience. It could also lay a good foundation of working for that company eventually. You could also use the contacts you will be getting for that company so that you could get a job at another organization or company. Here are some steps to lend a good journalism internship.
• On the beginning, look for internships just right after you finish your freshman year at college so that you could probably visit your university's career center to look for any recent job postings.
• Generally, paid internship in journalism is hard to find so make your decision on whether you would be doing a paid internship or you want to do internship for credit. Lot of the medium and bigger companies pay interns, however it would not be much so when you do an internship, you would actually be gaining experience.
• Send a personal resume along with some samples of your work to the different media outlets, like television stations and newspapers. Though a lot of people wish to land internships at the major media outlets, so it is not really matters which company you would eventually work for as long as you would be getting the experience.
• Always try to send an email message to the coordinator in charge of recruitment, as well as the editor and director of those places that you have applied with so that they would have knowledge about your flair reporting skills. This would also provide you with an opportunity in familiarizing your name to them. You could email them again after a week so that you will be confirming whether they are interested in your work or not.
• Give your hundred percent. Think your internship as a "trial period" of your journalistic career.
