IIFT 2010 Analysis: 135 questions with moderate difficulty - By: MBA

IIFT 2010 was held yesterday, Sunday, November 28, 2010. The test brought with it yet another development of increasing the number of questions as compared to last year. The number of questions was 135. Last year, the number of questions was 122. The duration of the paper was two hours. No sectional cut off was mentioned in the paper. The paper was lengthy and the Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning section questions were lengthy. The sections remained the same. There were four sections, which were Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning and General Awareness. The overall cut off should be more than 39 to get a call from IIFT Delhi and more than 33 to get a call from IIFT Kolkata. Let us have a look at the section wise analysis of IIFT 2010.
Quantitative Ability
The number of questions in this section was 30. The difficulty level can be rated as moderate to difficult. The questions were from the topics like Number Systems, Progression, Percentages, Averages, Permutation and Combination, Probability, Profit and Loss, Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration, Algebra, Time, Speed & Distance etc. Each question of this section had one mark. According to the experts, cut off should be more than 10 and for that, attempt of 10 to 12 questions with 90 per cent accuracy should be enough.
Verbal Ability
This section was divided into two parts, English Usage and Reading Comprehension. The total number of questions in this section was 40. In English Usage part there were 25 questions and in the Reading Comprehension part there were 15 questions. In EU there were questions from Fill in the blanks, Correct Way of phrasing, Verbal Analogies, Spelling correction, Para Jumble and sentence correction.
The Reading Comprehension passages were on the topics of Business, Economics, Psychology and Investment. The difficulty level of the section was Moderate but it was tougher than the last year. Many of the questions were vague in nature.
The English Usage marks was 0.5 per question and the Reading Comprehension marks was 0.7 per question. The total marks for this section was 23. In the English Usage section, more than 10 questions should have been attempted and the cut off should be more than four. For the Reading Comprehension questions, the number of attempts should be more than seven and the cut off should be more than four.
Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning
This section had 35 questions with one mark each. There were 15 questions on Data Interpretation and 20 questions on Logical Reasoning. The Logical Reasoning part was easier compared to Data Interpretation part. An attempt of more than 17 questions should be enough to clear the cut off which should be more than 15.
General Awareness
There were 30 questions in this section. Marks per question was 0.4, hence the total marks was 12. The questions were from traditional as well as dynamic GK. There were questions from business, Country-Capital-Currency-Parliaments, Current Affairs, Locations of International Organizations and Economics etc. An attempt of more than 12 questions with 90 per cent accuracy should be well enough.
