We can all have periods when we feel very low and there is normally a very good reason for this feeling; this is especially true if you've had a recent traumatic experience in your life, but it doesn't necessarily mean that you're suffering from depression. Probably the most likely cause is stress, often owing to family or other relationship problems which for one reason or another cannot be readily solved; eventually if the situation is allowed to continue, the problem will just get worse. If you just try to ignore it and do not take any action, seek help or treatment, you may end up with more problems; the answer is to get the help needed to face the problem and stop it controlling your life.

Many more people become depressed owing their job which may be stressful, or there could be problems with managers and other co-workers which are difficult to resolve; without an intermediary stepping in these circumstances often result in the person suffering with panic attacks as well. Together with this, you may also experience feelings of stress and unhappiness and become unsure how to handle problems; it may be necessary to work through the issues with a professional to get back on track again. There are times where a person has been prescribed medication for an illness, for example, and a side effect caused by the chemicals in the medication is depression; this can give rise to these feelings even though the person does not have any emotional problems.

If signs like this become apparent, the medication needs to be stopped as soon as possible and the doctor who prescribed the medication consulted. A worse situation happens where despite the best efforts of everyone involved, the reason for the person's depression cannot be found; when they don't seem to have any cause that can be identified as the reason for the problem, medical staff will have to research the patient further. The problem can arise when the person cannot see that a certain situation or event for instance, as the cause; when this happens the person cannot associate the condition with the cause.

Although around for a long time, it is well known that manic depression or bipolar as it is also known can be hard to diagnose; owing to the type of symptoms displayed by this condition, some people wait up to five years to have a correct diagnosis made. Once a person has become depressed, it has reached a stage where they need help to overcome it but they must realize this for themselves if the treatment is too be successful. Delay is the worst thing to do, so seek medical help as soon as you realize the problem is not going away; a full recovery is possible providing you take the appropriate steps.
