Hunting Knives: What Every Hunter Needs - By: michael russell

There once was a time in history when it was very common to give hunting knives to young men as a sign of their growing independence. Perhaps this tradition is somewhat lost in today's society, but it is an idea that is still quite respected; as a symbol of true masculinity and his responsibility in the community.

Of course today, knives like these are very strong, with a steel blade fixed into a durable handle. Traditionally, as a hunting tool, they were designed for quick kills, requiring that you thrust the blade quickly into your prey. This was not only to kill it quickly, but to protect you from danger too. Although it is brutal and wild, it was the reality at the time, and still is to a certain extent.

However, there are other styles of knife that you might appreciate just the same. Pocket knives, for instance are far more practical, offering a few different blades for a variety of purposes that do not involve the killing of animals. You can use pocket knives for whittling, carving, shaping, and many other less dangerous activities.

There are many pocket knife models that are so comprehensive that you may not need another tool. For instance, some are more like multi-purpose tools, offering access to several blades and tweezers and even scissors! Although you may not need all of these extra tools and blades all of the time, it is certainly nice to know that you can have the option if you choose.

Both hunting and pocket knives are also very safe. Either they feature blades that lock when exposed and fold in when not in use, or they come with a sheath that is specific to that blade. This is a comforting feature that assures your safety.

If indeed you are interested in one of these blades for the purposes of hunting, you should know that you will likely not find one that can do it all. However, some blades are better than other in terms of durability and longevity. It is sometimes quite simply a matter how the manufacturer tempers the steel.

While hunting knives are designed with the needs of a hunter or fisherman in mind, they are also quite practical for standard camping purposes, and even for emergencies. They can cut through many kinds of tough material, but also offer superb protection against animal attacks, or other threats you might encounter, even on the city streets!
