If watching internet TV is too much like hard work, then Hulu have the answer in the shape of a newly released desktop internet TV app.
Named ‘Hulu Desktop’, the software runs on Windows and Mac based computers and can be viewed using mouse, keyboard, or any six button PC or Mac remote control device.
Hulu commented in a blog post:- “Hulu Desktop was built by a small group on our engineering team who asked themselves one day, how can we make it easier for users to immerse themselves in the great shows and movies Hulu is fortunate to have access to? Our answer was to build a new PC and Mac application that gives users the option to step outside of their browser, keyboard and mouse and into something different.”

Desktop is part of Hulu Labs, a new beta section on the site that will provide sneak peaks at upcoming material.
“From new recommendation algorithms to tools for building custom widgets to a time-based view for browsing your favorite shows, we’ll be sharing a variety of these new creations with you at Hulu Labs,” the catch up tv company revealed.
Can you get everything on Hulu Desktop that you find on Hulu.com?
“Generally speaking the Hulu library on Hulu.com will be available through Hulu Desktop,” Hulu said on its site. “While our goal is to have the same content library available on through all of our distribution channels, we work together with our partners to determine availability of their content on these various channels.”
You don’t need to set up an account to download and watch Hulu content, but you will need to sign in to access your queue, history, subscriptions, playback quality and closed captioning preferences. Profile details, privacy settings and friends are not accessible from Hulu Desktop.
The download will require at least 2GB of RAM, a Flash installation, and Windows XP or Mac OS v10.4 or later.
This new application could explain why Hulu was so anti the Boxee device and removed all streams from said hardware.
Boxee commented via a blog post that it hopes the Desktop app means the two sites can work together again. “We’re glad to see Hulu had a change of heart about bringing their service to the big screen, and we hope that this means Hulu content is coming back to Boxee,” CEO Avner Ronen said in a blog post. “We’ve already put in a request to Hulu to work with them on bringing Hulu back to Boxee, and we’ll let you know the response.”
Hulu now have streaming TV from the ABC network, meaning that only CBS does not yet supply tv streams from the major networks.

After the deal between Hulu and British TV networks ITV and Channel 4 hit a deadlock (see Hulu UK launch has a hitch) , Youtube has suddenly jumped into the mix.
The mighty video site YouTube is in negotiations apparently with said TV networks to stream full length episodes on their website. Currently Youtube only show small clips of the networks shows.
It looks like YouTube does not want to be left behind in the online TV wars after fierce rival Hulu wants to start broadcasting internationally showing full length content.
Added to the mix is news that Sony Pictures are also considering showing full length streams on Googles flagship video site. Whilst YouTube are remaining quiet regarding any deals, Sony have commented:- “YouTube’s aim is to do something with long form. We are in discussions with it about that”.
Youtube are still looking for a profit making website and the big bucks seem to be in premium content rather than the selection of funny shorts they are famous for.
As the online TV landscape takes shape, it will be decisions like these that will either kill a video sharing site or make it thrive. There are only so many TV content providers in the world and the online TV sites are all jostling to get into bed with them.
And just imagine, if Youtube can start streaming UK TV then instead of just showing the Susan Boyle video clip, they can stream the whole Britains got Talent show.
