How to make Your Home Safer on a Budget - By: John Cherry

If everyone could afford to install a home security system, you can be sure that every house would have one. Most homeowners understand that installing a home security system is probably the best way to keep their families and their property safe. Unfortunately, not everyone has the financial means to pay for a top-notch security system and the monthly monitoring fees that go with it. Luckily, though, there are plenty of ways to make your home and family safer without spending a fortune.

Not many people realize that they can provide a significant amount of protection for their families and homes just by faking it. You can simply post signs around your property that say you have an alarm system installed even if you don’t. Believe it or not, this can be an effective deterrent to would-be criminals because often, they don’t want to take the chance that you really don’t have a home security system installed. They are more likely to pass by a house that advertises a home security system and target one that doesn’t.

In addition to letting strangers think you have a security system installed, you should install basic security lighting around your property and home. Just one or two fixtures can serve as an effective deterrent to people thinking about breaking into your house. The reason for this is that light is burglars’ enemy. They want the cover of darkness so they can do their dirty deeds without anyone seeing them. If you make sure your property is adequately lit up, burglars will probably look for a house that hasn’t taken that precaution. Moreover, ensure that the kind of lighting you install is motion activated so that it turns on whenever it detects motion. This way, you aren’t wasting energy and protecting your home at the same time.

One excellent step you can take toward protecting your home that won’t cost you a dime is to make sure your landscaping does not provide burglars with places to hide or access to top floors. Trim all your trees back so that they cannot be used as ladders and shape your bushes so that they do not offer hidden protection from sight for would-be thieves. You might even consider removing shrubbery entirely if you can’t find a way to shape it so it maintains its aesthetic appeal but doesn’t block your view from inside the house.

You might not be able to afford a home security system, but that doesn’t mean you can’t protect your home and family. The cheap or free suggestions listed here can go a long way in making sure you keep them as safe as they can be.
