College can be a difficult adjustment for many students, especially those from smaller areas. In life, we develop a lot of "who we are" in relation to how other people see us. If you were the intelligent guy, funny girl, etc, you aren't anyone when you reach college. This is one mistaken way of thinking because it's healthiest to establish your own self-concept. Decide what kind of person you think you are and view yourself according to that image.

Of course, college can be a difficult adjust in a variety of ways. The regularly A+ grade on every assignment may or may not disappear, but in the majority of cases, it at least takes time to adjust to college grading. High schools involve teachers that know students well and want them to succeed. While professors want students to succeed, they are actively pressured to keep grades in what is deemed an "acceptable range." This means when the average college student is an exceptional high school student, grades often become relative to the competition. You should recognize your efforts as much as your achievements and look at "improvements" as significant. Although a 70% over your previous 60% on an essay may be unsatisfactory to you, it's still 10% closer to your goal. If you conceptualize your achievements in terms of "all or nothing," you're setting yourself up for a lot of potential disappointment. Furthermore, the practice of regularly recognizing your achievements can boost self-esteem and keep confidence up.

In addition to college academics, you will find yourself in a position where you may not know anyone. Not everyone is social, but if you want to establish relationships, get active in clubs and talk to students in your classes. Friends provide a means of support in terms of telling someone your problems, finding someone who identifies with your difficulties, and getting advice. You can turn to people online, parents, friends from high school, doctors, therapists, and all kinds of people to keep you going. Frustration is normal but the inability to express it and deal with your problems can slowly decrease your confidence in your own abilities or personal worth.

Furthermore, there are somewhat superficial aspects that can help you maintain confidence. Many traits are valued above others whether they are better or not. For instance, some people are organized in a seemingly disorganized manner, but those who have neat piles are looked at more favorably. If you organize your life, complete things on a schedule, and finish papers early, you can feel smug (don't be smug) when other students complain about staying up all night. Furthermore, you'll likely do better on your projects and have less of a chance of feeling disappointed in your efforts. Most students will tell themselves that they can't make changes to improve their situation, which causes them to subconsciously reinforce the idea that they aren't in control over their own life. A lack of control is typically a form of weakness and certainly not aligned with the promotion of a positive self-concept. Admitting that your procrastination caused a low grade can give you a potential means of solving your issue. Alternatively, "woe is you for the terrible situation you can't avoid."

Additionally, things like dressing nicely, exercising, and eating healthy can promote both to you and others that you're "healthy and professional." Picture two men, one with holes in his clothes, uncombed hair, and a chocolate bar. The other is clearly muscular, in a suit and eating an orange. I would strongly discourage people from judging others on this basis as I think it's inappropriate, but both consciously and subconsciously, many people would claim the latter person is more successful. It's my example, and it turns out the first person is a successful surgeon who has been awake over forty hours treating victims of a bus crash. He tore his clothes in a rush to prep for a life or death surgery and is going home because he lives close by. He got the chocolate bar on the way. The other person sells time shares to elderly couples with limited incomes. Even though one judges the latter "better" in most cases without just reason for doing so, it doesn't mean you can't benefit yourself from being nicely dressed, exercising, and eating healthy. It's good for you.

College has many engaging experiences waiting for students, but these experiences come with the realization that you are more independent than before, are closer to the workforce, and aren't sure who you want to be in life. Stress is worrying, but don't let it make you feel you're "less." The person who has everything "planned out" is probably going to return to school again after twenty years in an industry they disliked. Recognize that college isn't black and white and that mistakes happen. Work on improving yourself and recognize that the world is infinitely complex. If you think there isn't a solution to a problem, you're probably wrong.
