How to live life without your teeth guard now. - By: Allan Michael Taylor

For those who are unaware, Bruxism is a teeth grinding disorder, and in fact, it is considered to be one of the most destructive dental conditions. To make matters worse, in lots of cases the illness goes undetected, and even when it is detected, it's generally nothing more than a mere inconvenience at first. The reason for this is because nearly all sufferers (Bruxers) generally only suffer from the disorder while they're asleep, and nearly all people only realize they have the condition when they frequently begin waking up with a painful jaw, earache, and in extreme cases, even broken teeth.

Unfortunately, if the disorder is left undiagnosed it may lead to other dental disorders such as TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction). This of course, is a direct result of endless grinding and/or clenching of the teeth, which over time ends up causing the temporomandibular joints to become inflamed. This condition will generally result in someone experiencing difficulty and pain when they open their mouth, in conjunction with very bad headaches and jaw popping.

So, is there anything you can do if you think you are now suffering with Bruxism? Of course, it stands to reason that if you have this disorder you should immediately visit with a dental surgeon, who will in turn be able to diagnose whether or not you do indeed have Bruxism. If you do, your dentist will discuss with you as to what choices you should consider, ranging from the wearing of a teeth guard, through to surgery.

Teeth guards are generally made from silicon by taking a mold of your teeth, and for the most part, they are largely similar to the gum shields which boxers wear . A teeth guard is worn at night while you go to sleep in order to discourage you from grinding your teeth together. Although a teeth guard can not entirely stop you from grinding your teeth, it can prevent damage. Unfortunately however, the average teeth guard costs $400.00 or more.

Also, irrespective of the quality or cost of your teeth guard, it simply can't be considered a solution, as whilst it may help to buffer your teeth, it can't enable you to crack your habit, and so you will still discover yourself waking up with headaches and a painful jaw.

So, is there anything else you might do in order to find relief, and perhaps help you to get rid of a teeth guard? Yes, there are many of things you can try, many of which you can research on the internet. In fact many of the home cures are rather unique and unusual.

What about, just before you go to bed chew on a cauliflower floret, carrot stick or wedge of hard pear. It is said that this may calm an over-active mouth and stop teeth grinding. Or you could try relaxing your jaw muscles by wrapping a warm face-cloth over the joints.

Another Bruxism inducer is believed to be stress, so if you can lower your stress levels then this should go a long way to helping. Have your husband/wife massage your neck, shoulders and back, or do some stress relieving exercises. You may even consider buying yourself a stress ball.

Back in bed, there are a few things that are believed to assist. Try only on your back, it is believed that laying on your front or side can increase your susceptibility to Bruxism. If you are unable to sleep on your back then think about being a bit creative with your pillows. Position a memory foam pillow under your face and an ordinary pillow between your arms. This can relieve strain from your neck and jaw and can go a long way to stop you rolling all the way over onto your stomach.

Finally, you should really be trying to stay away from caffeine, sugary treats, and alcohol. Contrary to what you may believe, studies have proved that even a couple of drinks can disturb your sleep, while also start unconscious jaw movements. Considering that almost everyone is aware of the fact that caffeine stops you sleeping, there's not much need to discuss why it should be avoided before bedtime. Foods and drinks which contain loads of sugar are proven to inflate blood sugar levels but the level quickly drops back to normal, and after it does, you might feel exhausted but at the same time you'll be unable to sleep properly. If you are willing to stick to some of the tips talked about in this document, you should be able to find some welcome relief whilst at the same time you'll also be able to remove your reliance on your teeth guard.
