How to lead yourself out of career frustration - By: Chris Makell

Remember, it's not what happens to you, but what happens in you that counts. -- John Maxwell

What steps are you taking today to increase your personal leadership and having the career that gives you more juice and energy?

There is a resurgence going on in the workplace. Sure there are still some layoffs in places, but career professionals globally are feeling the "pull" to exercise their personal leadership and create what they want to experience in their career. That desire, for more knowledge, skill, leadership and money is a powerful driver.

It's no small feat to persevere with all that is swirling around us. However there are opportunities to create an emotional "state" change that will serve each one of us in the future. This emotional "state" change is taking action and exercising your personal leadership. It's recognizing the abundant insight available to you, right now. How will you tap into this gift and lead your career and life as a result of what you're learning in this environment.

This doesn't have to be a big aha or breakthrough event. In fact, if you're waiting for that, you're missing the breadcrumbs that are lining your path to insight and wisdom. You're seeing, feeling and thinking new thoughts as you look around the workplace and the "life" place today. People are acting and reacting in new and sometime disturbing ways. But, what are you learning about yourself, as a result? Perhaps it's a new way of being or not being?

Let me give you an example of what I mean.

Carrie works in an organization that has seen some layoffs and restructuring of work. She has assumed a lot more work and responsibilities. Looking around, there are those who are working 12-14 hour days, fearful of being the next on the radar. But their contributions are not matching the time spent.

Carrie, on the other hand, sees tremendous opportunity to be more efficient and focused in the work she's doing. And yet, the fear of not being "seen" causes her to stay late sometimes, even when she's caught up. There are no "bonus points" for extra effort so she gets frustrated with wanting to do more, but then "why".

So she begins to daydream and think about what more she can do to lead her career and life in the direction that uses her talents and skills, without fear at its core.

Notice Carrie isn't focused on money; she's focused on her deep and abiding need to do a great and satisfying job, while not being fearful and unappreciated.

There are a few things Carrie can do to satisfy this need.

- She can begin to build a plan to start her own business and take control of how she spends her time does more than getting caught up.

- She can look at sharing her expertise both online and offline by creating a website/blog or teach which will give her a deep sense of fulfillment and appreciation.

- She can offer to mentor those with whom she works to help them become more efficient and effective with their time and build her leadership and teaming skills.

Carrie, by the way, did take the option to begin developing a business and become more entrepreneurial. She is taking action and using her personal leadership to create the life and career she wants. By developing the transition plan, while she's working, she's infused energy and enthusiasm into her days and evenings.

Watching and paying attention to what's happening around you and not taking personal leadership to make it work for you is a sorely missed opportunity. We are all being gifted with the "breadcrumbs" that give us license to take our own personal leadership to new and untold heights. You are responsible for your career satisfaction and fulfillment. Now, you can lead your self to the best that you deserve. Use the time, energy, opportunities and your personal leadership to do so, today!
