How to holiday on a Budget in Menorca Island of Unique History! - By: Philip Bromley

There is no doubt
in the mind of regular visitors that you may be on a
Balearic Island but that it is totally different from
any of the other islands in the group such as
Ibiza, Formentera or Mallorca.

I will not comment on Mallorca as I have never visited
that island but from
holidays in Ibiza and Formentera I can vouch for the singular charm of Menorca.

The island's population swells in high season as the 90,000 locals are joined each week by visitors, from as far afield as the USA but mainly from Germany, the UK and the Spanish mainland.

There is no doubt that most visitors head for the beaches leaving the interior for the almost exclusive use of the local population.

In the past the locals shunned away from the coastlines not because of medieval tourists but because of the dangers posed by the Pirates who controlled the coastal strips.

It is hardly surprising that the stunning playas are the primary draw for holidaymakers. There are literally 200 hundred beaches and coves of which the vast majority can be relatively easily acccessed by land or sea you can understand why you can still walk a short distance from a popular location to find yourself on a near deserted beach, even at the height of summer.

Menorca's relaxing and unspoilt countryside and virgin beaches and coves is the result of the island having learned, very quickly, from the errors of the other Baleraric Islands. In 1993 Menorca became a Biosphere Reserve. As a result of the UNESCO Biosphere programme nearly half of the island began being protected from overdevelopment, by one means or another. This halted the worst excesses of mass tourism which had affected significant parts of its sister islands. Today Menorca has no Ibiza Town , no Santa Antoni and no Magaluf.

What does Menorca have in abundance, away from its wealth of beaches. There are Archeological remainds from burial chambers dating from 5000BC together with ancient settlement throughout the island.

You can find History at every turn with Muslim place names such as towns with the prefix Bini, meaning "son of", Roman Ruins at the port of Sanisera and evidence of the islands Pirate past especially along its southern coastline.

As Europe grew in importance and scummed to a period of war making the island became a pawn in these events and came under the rule of the English, the French and the Spanish in less than 200 years of its 7,000 year history.

Despite the short period of occupationall of these occupying powers have left their mark on Menorca's history and made it the unique island you see today. Remember Menorca is only 2 hours flying time from most of the UK making the airfare cheap and your carbon footprint smaller. Accommodation can be as expensive or as economical as you wish, Menorca even has two campsites.
