Heel pain in children is ordinary and a commonly seen incident. We often see mothers complaining about - My kid’s heels are killing him with the pain.
But it must not to be left unattended. Kids heel pain is a very common sight and is seen in most growing-up and active kids. Normally seen in young athletes between the ages of 8 to 14 years, it’s not a disease but a sign of a disease. It’s an alarm that your child may need a podiatrist’s attention.
Most children suffer from heel pain especially in their growing years due to repeated minor heel injuries which occur during sports.
The Cause –
- Calcaneal apophysitis:
The most common cause of heel pain in kids. There is an inflammation and redness on the heel plate due to muscle strain.
- Tendo-Achilles bursitis:
Tendo- Achilles bursitis results from heel injuries such as juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Other reason is wearing clumsy fit shoes causing inflammation to fluid-filled sac positioned between the Achilles tendon (heel cord) and the heel bone.
- Overuse syndromes:
Achilles tendonitis is the most common overuse syndrome which causes inflammation of the tendon due to repeated running and thumping on hard surfaces.
- Fractures:
Children are always hyper-active. Repetitive stress on their feet result in minor, acute, stress and hairline fractures.
These are some basic reasons for the cause of pediatric heel pain. Moreover beneath are a number of symptoms to realize that your kid is in misery from heel pain.
The Symptoms –
- Pain at the back or bottom of the heel.
- Slight Limp while walking.
- May walk on toes due to discomfort while walking.
- Might have trouble taking part in usual sport activities.
The Treatment (Handling Process) –
- Trim down or put a temporary hold to any physical activity that causes discomfort like running, jumping or any sport activity till it heals completely.
- Use comfy, cushioned shoes that help and reduce any solid impact on the foot while walking, standing.
- In case any critical situation, visit the podiatry clinic immediately.
- Medications like Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen as administered by the podiatrist.
- Physical therapy can be used to encourage healing.
- Use of orthotic devices like a crutch, cast that support the foot and avoid pressure on the foot.
- Surgery, if suggested by the podiatrist.
With a bit of luck, explaining and getting the child involved will be one of the most excellent effects that facilitate dealing with heel pain.
