How to develop as a guitarist - By: Brooke Pens

There are many amateur guitar players who enjoy playing guitar and can play to a reasonable level, but perhaps feel they have hit a plateau in terms of their development. For such guitarists there are many routes to making progress and breaking out of a rut.

The first is to try and approach the guitar from a different playing angle. For example, if a guitarist is used to learning pieces from sheet music or tablature, it can sometimes be refreshing to try and pick out tunes and solos by ear by playing a track over and over again. Even managing to identify the key of a guitar piece by ear can give a guitarist an immense degree of satisfaction.

The second option is to try and locate fellow guitarists. Two or more guitarists can learn a great deal off each other since each guitarist will have his or her own set of skills and a different approach to playing music.

A third option is to try and learn a different type of music. This can not only broaden a player’s repertoire but can also feed positively into the player’s original style. Sting’s exploration of folk music could be said to be an example of this type of cross-genre fertilisation.

It may be that learning a new type of music could require the purchase of a different kind of guitar. Electric guitars for example will often be more suited to rock music than acoustic guitars. Sometimes simply the prospect of buying a new guitar can be a real fillip to a player; many guitarists who have had little contact with bass guitars, for example, may be excited at the prospect of buying a bass guitar to add to their collection.

At Fret Music we will be happy to advise guitarists on how to extend their skills and perhaps take a fresh approach to their musical output.
