When one applies for a new job, most cases require a cover letter. Every employer would be interested to go beyond formal facts mentioned in the resume and most of them understand why you are applying for the position and also why it is suitable for you. In some cases, you might be asked to provide your plus points or what you are best at. In every case, cover letter has to be written very carefully and attention has to be given that it answers all the requirements asked in the job posting.

Importance of Cover Letter
It should be kept in mind that the cover letter is the key to the interview. If you cover letter is admired by the employer, then it is most likely that he will proceed to the next step which is the interview. There is no chance of getting hired without an interview and without a cover letter, it is most likely that there will be no interview. This is the reason that the cover letter has to be written correctly. It should be the best.

Structure of a Cover Letter
It is not very difficult to write a cover letter. Some principles have to be followed, that is all. The alignment of cover letter is to the left. The address and the date should be on the top. The name, company and the address of the employer should be mentioned below.

The body of the cover letter generally starts with a greeting. It is then followed by a paragraph which explains to the employer why you are applying for the particular job. It would be good to show some knowledge of the company as it will impress the employer. It should also contain some knowledge of the requirements of the position being applied for.

The next paragraph should convince the employer that you are the best suitable person for the position. Modesty has to be kept aside and focus should be on the qualification relevant for the job. This is probably the longest part of the cover letter. However, to make it impressive it must not exceed more than two paragraphs. A standard cover letter should not be more than one page.

The final paragraph is supposed to list the documents you are applying, the employer should be thanked for the time he or she devoted for your application and it should be mentioned that will be looking forward for a feedback within a few days. The end of the letter contains the salutation which is also formal.

In the end, the cover letter should be checked for spelling and grammar mistakes. There must not be any errors, otherwise you may never proceed to the interview.

As you have seen, writing a cover letter requires attention for the details besides following the guidelines. It should be precise and exact in writing as it will save a lot of time of the eventual future employer. The simple it is written, the best will be the result.
