The most important thing to remember when writing any college paper is that every paragraph and point has to be delivered with an equal amount of punch. The introduction should start by explaining what piece of literature you are going to be discussing and why. You have to convey to your audience your purpose in writing this essay. If your professor doesn't give you writing prompt or question to answer, then it is your job to come up with your own. That question needs to be raised somewhere in your introductory paragraph and your thesis should answer this question and give the reader some idea of how you are going to prove your thesis. The introduction is also the only place you should put any background information you think is necessary.

The body paragraphs need to flow from one into the other, so you have to first figure out in which order you are going to place your points. Preferably, you want the most powerful one to be last. Remember that, unless your professor specifically says the paper needs to have a certain amount of paragraphs, you can step outside of the rigid five paragraph essay format that is usually forced upon Freshman English students. Body paragraphs also start out with an introductory sentence to tell the reader what the paragraph is going to be about and how it contributes to proving the thesis. Don't spend too much time re-wording the same points throughout your paragraphs or essay. The paragraphs should be hearty and chock full of details and proper analysis.

A literature paper needs to have quotes from the text that is being examined, followed by detailed explanations of those quotes and how they contribute to the point you are trying to make. All quotes need to have the page numbers cited in the text. Try to incorporate at least two quotes into every body paragraph. Make sure that the last sentence in each body paragraph leads into the next.

The conclusion should begin with your thesis worded in a different way than in your introduction. In the next few sentences, you want to write about the points you made in your body paragraphs. This emphasis will remind the reader of what they read while reinforcing the reasons that your thesis works. The last sentence of your paper should sum everything up and have some extra zing to it.
