How to Wrap the Vapor Barrier in the Most Effective Manner in Your Crawl Space? - By: Susan J Morris

Vapor barrier is a material (mostly plastic) used to prevent the walls from being moist. Such barriers are often used in case you have a crawl space basement. Crawl space basement is a name commonly used for a basement in which a person cannot stand up. The height of such basement is so little that you need to crawl in case you want to enter the basement and the surface is mostly made of soil. Such place is can never be used for living space but is often used for pipes, storage area or for keeping used items. Therefore to safeguard such items from getting moist the entire area needs to be wrapped with vapor barriers.

Vapor barriers need to be wrapped properly around the entire crawling space in order to do their job effectively and efficiently. Certain steps that need to be followed in order to make your investment worthy are as follows:

You must use the most effective drainage system in order to keep the crawling space safe from moist. You must make slope in order to prevent the water from entering into the foundation of your home. Slope prevents the water from flowing towards the house this way all the rain water or any other water will flow towards the opposite direction of your home keeping the crawling space of your home safe from water.

Dig a 2 inches deep channel all around the boundaries of the crawl space and wrap the boundaries with vapor barrier or retarder overlapping them at the height of at least 2 feet. One thing that must be kept in mind and should not be forgotten at any cost is that you must lengthen the sheet at least 12 inches of all four sides of the crawling space in order to ensure that the walls do not get moist at all.

After wrapping the boundaries of the crawling space you must cut the sheet nearby any fixed object in the crawling space such as floor beam supports. Don’t forget to tape all the seams and the cut spaces otherwise your entire effort will go to waste. Once you are done with tapping and wrapping, fill up the channel that you dig earlier in order to wrap the vapor barrier.

Shore up the excess amount of vapor barrier again the crawl space walls with the help of tape in order to make sure that they do not get loosened as a loose vapor barrier will not at all be effective. One thing that must be kept in mind is that the vapor retarder should extend above the grade level in order to fulfill its purpose properly.

Last but not the least you must make sure that you cover the vapor barrier with a thin layer of soil or concrete in order to ensure that it does not get damaged when you walk on it.

In order to prevent the walls of your crawl space from getting moist and ruining all the item that you had kept in that area or the pipes you must make use of vapor barriers or retarders and it will not only protect the things you have kept there but will also act as a guard towards keeping the foundation of your home strong and durable.
