Facebook is a simple social networking application to use: you simply register and use it to make contact with friends and relatives, and also to make new friends. That was the original purpose of Facebook, but it has developed a lot since then. Here are the basic functions of Facebook and also some of the ways in which it has developed to make it more interesting to many people irrespective of their age.

When you search for 'Facebook' on any search engine you will find a link to the home page where you can register to join. Simply provide the details they request - you will not be accepted as a member without them - and then confirm your membership by clicking on the link sent to your email address. That is simply a security measure to make sure that you own that email address.

Next, you login using the login details you provided and can then get going. I am not going to go over all the features on the Facebook home page because that spoils the fun, but here are some of the things you can do using it:

Make Friends: You can email others through the messaging system provided. In fact Facebook enables you to contact individuals by email or everybody on your list using a mass email, but first you need a list of Friends. To get started you should ask your friends and relatives that are already on Facebook to be a Friend. They will invite you and you can accept or refuse.

Say you accept: you can then check out your Friend's 'Wall' which is where the public posts are placed. You will understand better when you join. If you see anybody there you want to be friends with then ask them - if the page belongs to a friend or relative of yours you will likely recognize many of them, and off you go!

From there you are best simply to play about with Facebook and see what you can do with it. You can arrange your Friends and Relatives into groups, and email everybody in each group using a single multiple emailing, and even send a message to everybody in all your lists.

The message does not appear as an email to your recipients, but they get a message from Facebook informing them that you have been sent a message, and you simply have to go to your own Wall to see the message. If it is a private message only you will be able to read it.

Facebook also offers loads of apps, some in the form of games that you can play against everybody else and others in the form of quizzes that tell you what your personality is for example. Try them and see what they are about - some are free but many are not.

That's Facebook - primarily a way of contacting people, and I have found that a Facebook message gets read quicker than an email to the recipient's regular email address. People that are into Facebook tend to be on Facebook more frequently than they check their emails!

Check it out yourself - you will love it. It is not MySpace and different to Friendster. It is very much a personal opinion, so check it out yourself.
