How to Turn Good Employees into Great Ones - By: Torri Myler

Most business owners have their hands full, so they often rely on the managers to deal with issues arising on daily basis. To do that without having to worry much, they first of all try to hire the right people, meaning ones that are well educated and experienced in leadership positions. But a good employee can always be turned into a great one, which is why more and more companies turn to executive trainers for professional corporate trainings.

These are people who use their own educational background and work experience to help others reach their leadership potential. They can teach managers skills not taught in classrooms, such as assertive dealing with problematic workers, quick decision making, quality customer handling, and many others. Aside from teaching managers new abilities, executive trainers will also help them turn weak points into strong ones, as well as understand various management patterns best suiting different personalities.

After deciding to have a seminar for the managers conducted, the company owner still has some decisions to make, and choosing the executive trainer is of top priority. There are numerous trainers available, so it is very important to find one that will teach the managers the very set of skills that is required in their position. For example, managers supervising production workers do not have to be able to service customers, but they do have to know how to take care of an argument between co workers; a restaurant manager, however, needs to not only oversee the work of the cooks and waiters, but also know how to calm down dissatisfied customers.

When the executive trainer choice is taken, it is very important to set the logistics rules. Both the trainer and the managers must know beforehand whether the seminar is a one time occurrence or maybe will happen over a few days period. Managers should also have some input into when the training will be conducted. Most
executive trainers offer their services during the week, on the weekends, and even in the evening hours, so the schedule can definitely be set to fit everybody.

Some training starts the moment the managers enter the room, but company owners should find out if that is the case, as some executive trainers ask their trainees to fill out some forms or read some materials that can be found on-line. Letting the workers know ahead of time that they need to get ready for the seminar, will make for better experience, because they will start off on equal foot and prepared.

Possibly the most important thing for the managers taking part in a business training course conducted by a skilled executive trainer is knowing that it is for their own benefit. Some of them, especially the experienced ones, might consider such training to be a waste of time, so it helps if their boss informs them what they will get out not only in terms of practical knowledge, but also in terms of future possibilities.

Even a short seminar will teach managers some new skills. Additionally, a good executive trainer may point out to the owner the participants’ strengths and suggest future development for the team and for exceptional individuals. So a training session has a potential of not only teaching the managers, but also of setting up their future path within the company.
