How to Straighten Hair - By: Michelle R. Scott

Nowadays, sleek and straight hair is what we all want but not everyone is blessed with pin-straight locks, so this is where hair straightener’s become our new best friends. Hair straightening is possibly the easiest hair style you can give yourself, so become an expert by following these simple steps to smooth and silky locks.

1. Prepare your hair by applying a heat protectant that will protect your locks from damage. Be careful not to put too much or your hair will end up greasy and won’t hold its new straightened style.

2. Plug in your straightener and set it to the right temperature for your hair type. Low (180°F – 200°F) for thin and fragile hair, medium (250°F – 350°F) for normal hair and high (360°F – 450°F) for thick, curly and coarse hair. Let it reach the right heat completely before using it.

3. Clip your hair up but leave a layer at the bottom so you can start there and work your way up. Take your straightener and with your free hand grab a one-inch section of hair and hold it taut. Clamp the plates of the straightener down on the section of hair as close to the roots as possible, then SLOWLY slide it downwards until you reach the ends. Repeat if necessary.

4. Keep sectioning and straightening until you’ve finished the layer, then unclip another layer and carry on. Continue this until your whole head of hair is straight. Spritz on some holding spray or an anti-frizz serum for added shine.

See? How simple was that? But even though straightening your hair is incredibly easy and you’ll probably want to have sleek and shiny hair all the time, try not to do it too often or you’ll dry up your locks. Take care of your hair by straightening sparingly and using good hair products to replenish lost moisture.

Professional products designed to revitalize your hair are readily available, but if you prefer to use something more natural then there are also plenty natural alternatives that are completely safe and extremely beneficial. Simple things like rubbing in warm olive oil 30 minutes before showering can really soften and replenish your hair. You can use eggs, milk or even avocado to bring out a vibrant shine that will reflect your hair’s good health. A little care can go a long way, so be good to your hair and let its natural beauty shine!
