How to Stop This Obsessive Fingernail Biting Habit For Good - By: J.J. Yong

It's a common fact that many people today bite their nails and make a habit out of it. People of all ages do it and there's a wide variety of reasons why from it being an emotional problem, psychological, medical and even just out of pure boredom. Regardless of the reason, nail biting is a horrible habit and if you've picked it up then it's about time you stop this obsessive tendency to bite and have nice fingernails.

Before you try all sorts of methods and techniques to help yourself to stop biting your nails, you first need to have the willpower and dedication to break the habit. The only way to be successful in doing such a challenging task is by doing it because you want to and not because someone told you that you should. Once you've got your head in the right place, start keeping your hands busy and out of sight. When your hands are busy with something, you're less likely to bite your nails so if you're watching a movie eat popcorn or hug a pillow, if you're reading then hold the book and don't use a book stand or a table. So long as your hands are kept busy, you won't be tempted to bite.

Besides that, you could also try changing the way your nails taste and not in a good way. You don't feel grossed out when you bite your nails because there is no taste, it's just like drinking water. So what you should do is make your nails taste really repulsive so that every time you try to put your fingers in your mouth, you'd be turned off by the taste and stop immediately. To do this, you could soak your hands in a kitchen solution of salt, water and lemon juice or you could even try vinegar but that would leave an unpleasant smell. For something less troublesome, you could purchase a bottle of bitter nail formula, specially created to curb nail biting from a drugstore and use it daily. The shocking taste will serve as a form of punishment and you'll stop biting your nails soon enough.

If you want to stop an addiction, you make the substance inaccessible just like how recovering alcoholics keep away from alcohol. So you're a recovering nail biter and to stay away from your source of addiction, you need to cut your nails and keep them short. Usually, nail biters have nothing to cut because the moment there's even a slight nail growth, they've got to it with their teeth already. So instead of biting everything off, keep a pair of nail clippers in easy to access place and cut your nails as soon as they grow. If your goal is to grow out your nails, you're going to have to sacrifice that for awhile and keep your nails short till you have the discipline to not bite.

Whatever the method, you can do it so long as you keep trying and put your heart into it. Kick that habit!
