How to Start Your Own Website - By: Chris Robertson

If you've been dreaming of your own website for quite some time now but don't have a clue as to how to get started, you'll be amazed to learn how easy it can be. Website design has come a long way in the last decade, but you don't even have to know website programming to get your own website up and running.

Website Designers

If you need a complex website with a customer shopping system and log-in capabilities, then you will likely need to hire a Web designer. With the right designer, you'll be able to get the look and feel you want on your website as well as have the functionality needed for smooth customer transactions. Web developers charge according to their time and skills, and some have ongoing monthly charges so your site will stay updated constantly. Do beware of those that seem to charge very cheap rates up front. You'll find that many of these either don't provide professional design work or they will leave you hanging when you need them the most for site updates! Find a reputable designer that's experienced in the type of website and programming you'll need.

Free Website Design

Some sites offer free websites and enable you to design a simple page or two (sometimes more) using their software. The problem with a totally free website is you might be required to allow the company's ads on your Web pages. And you will not likely have your own domain name, but only a page on the main company's domain. If you own a business, using a free site will probably only cause your customers to become frustrated or leave your site entirely through the additional banner ads. Get your own domain name....it's well worth the investment!

Paid Website Services

If you're on a limited budget but need to get a website up and running quickly, try a paid website service. With a paid service, you might pay as little as $10 per month, but these services usually provide you with your own domain name and website design software that's easy to use. You'll be able to add as many pages as you want and include links, photos, text, logos, etc. This is the next best thing to hiring a Web designer, and the process is fairly quick and easy once you know the basic theme of your website.

E-mail Tips

Whatever service you choose for a website, be sure you can send and receive e-mails through your site server. This is particularly important for business sites because you'll want your customers to recognize your business e-mails. If you use personal e-mail accounts for business contacts, this can cause distrust with customers. Ask your website host how many e-mails you can create and send/receive on your account.

These are just a few ideas to get a website started. Having a website is an ongoing process. Once up and running, be sure to continue to update your site, include relevant content and keywords (for search engine purposes), and never allow your website to become stagnant. You'll never regret having your own website because it's such an affordable way to reach out to the world!
