With so many women’s clothing stores on the high street and the internet, it’s tempting to think that it should be easy to pop out shopping and find exactly what you want – but any girl who has trawled through store after store, or website after website, looking for the perfect outfit or new pair of shoes will know that, sometimes, too much choice just makes shopping harder rather than easier.

If you’ve ever come home with an item of women’s clothing that you either don’t like, don’t need or that doesn’t go with anything else in your wardrobe you’re definitely in the majority – everyone, except personal shoppers, does this at one time or another and ends up asking themselves the same question: what made me buy this? I’m never going to wear it!

If all this rings a bell, try asking yourself the following questions before you embark on your next shopping trip. They'll help to make sure you’re not so overwhelmed by the sheer diversity of women’s clothing on offer that you end up making spur of the moment purchases which haunt your wardrobe for seasons to come.

Do I know my style? It’s pointless to keep shopping if you’re not totally sure what suits you and, equally as important, what you feel comfortable in. It’s fine to experiment with styles and trends but you should always have a firm idea of what suits you best so you can stock up on your ‘core’ fashion items.

Does shopping stress me out? If you usually hit the high street on Saturday afternoons you might find yourself grabbing any old thing from the racks just to avoid the high-pitched hordes of fellow shoppers crowding round for the changing rooms. The ideal solution for this is internet shopping – it’s convenient, totally stress free and, if you find retailers with a good returns policy, you can always send thing back if they’re not quite right.

What’s my budget? Always crucial to know how much you can spend before you get tempted by all the pretty new things in the latest ladies’ fashion ranges. Regardless of how flexible your card is, it’s always worth bargain hunting and, once again, looking online can be a great way to save money and time too. What do I need? Sometimes it’s great to shop for women’s clothes for the sake of pure retail therapy, but if you are in more desperate need of a wardrobe makeover, make a list of what you need – it sounds obvious but it will stop you from making impulse purchases.
