Can Satellite TV for PC really replace satellite dishes and high cable bills? Is it really legal? If so, how can you get satellite TV for PC?

There are two types of broadcast TV: free to air, and paid. Paid can either involve subscription channels, like HBO, or pay-per-view like some sporting events and movies on demand. Free to air broadcasts are the kind that anyone can pick up freely with an antenna. Major networks, like ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox broadcast their programs this way, and by satellite to their affiliate stations. Prior to the advent of cable, all TV was free to air. If that sounds too good to be true, it is. There were very few channels available and their programming tended to be geared to the broadest possible audience. Cable brought consumers much more choice, a higher-quality picture, and much more specialized programming. It also brought substantial monthly bills, where before, there were none.

Then along came the internet. Many networks began to make their free-to-air programming available over the internet as live or taped feeds. Most networks post a few choice morsels and teasers, but few stream their entire 24/7 output. PBS (the Public Broadcasting Station) make many of the documentaries produced for them available for free over the net, and Comedy Central offers snippets of The Daily Show.

Comedy Central isn't the only pay-for station that offers online programming. ESPN, Court TV and E! stream certain live events and taped programs. The content these channels offer is limited, as they make their living not through advertisers buying airtime like free-to-air TV, but through subscriptions. Normally, one subscribes as part of a package of several channels, either through cable or satellite. These channels limit the content they make available online, and limit live content even more.

Lastly, premium subscription channels like Home Box Office (HBO) and Showtime rarely make their content available online, except during promotions offered by their own websites. Trailers and sometimes even episodes from their original series are sometimes available, usually intended to entice new subscribers. As yet, these channels do not offer full subscriptions via the internet.

All of this television content is already available for free on the internet. You do not need special software, let alone hardware. Just a web browser, and the usual array of video-streaming and video-playing software: Macromedia Flash, Microsoft Windows Media Player, Apple Quicktime and Real One Player.

The internet is peppered with advertisements for special software designed to receive satellite TV for PC. Prices range from US$39.95 to US$99.95, generally. The advertisers claim that one can watch 3,000 to 4,000 channels. This is true, but somewhat misleading. It doesn't replace cable or your satellite dish, as there is no more programming available than there is over the web. In fact, these dedicated software packages offer the same programming as the web, they just provide a convenient interface. They are basically web browsers. But they will safe you significant time in finding this programming yourself.
