How to Recover hard drive when the hal.dll file goes missing in Windows XP - By: kmadhav

The Hal.dll file is a system file that provides the connect between the operating system and the hardware components. This abstraction layer file plays an important part in booting the system. Hence, it is crystal clear that in the absence of this file the system faces starting problems. This issue can be addressed by using several methods. If none of these methods are successful, then I would suggest you to use a Windows Hard Drive Recovery software for windows data recovery .

Talking about missing Hal.dll file cases, here's a practical scenario in which you are unable to start your Windows XP system. An error message is displayed in this regard, that is

“Winnt_rootSystem32Hal.dll missing or corrupt:
Please re-install a copy of the above file.”

Cause:

There could be the following reasons for this erroneous situation:

There is some hardware failure that is inducing this problem.
The location of Windows XP is stored incorrectly in the boot.ini file.
The default value of the boot.ini file is missing or damaged.
The Ntoskrnl.exe file is missing or damaged.
The partition path is given incorrectly in the boot.ini file.

Resolution:

To solve this situation, you should perform the following methods:

Start the system from the Recovery Console and, then, run the chkdsk /p tool to scan the hard disk for errors and repair them.
You should run the bootcfg tool in the Recovery Console to rectify the boot.ini file.

You should edit the boot.ini file to correct the 'Default' entry. This will ensure that other entries in the 'Operating System' of the boot.ini file address to the suitable folders.

You should use the following steps to correct the 'ntoskrnl.exe' file:

Insert the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive to start the system with the CD.
Press the 'R' key to start the system from the Recovery Console.
While being in the Recovery Console command prompt, enter the following command and press Enter:

expand :i386ntoskrnl.ex_ :Windowssystem32ntoskrnl.ex
If the system prompts you about overwriting the file, press Y.
Type 'Exit' and press enter to exit the system and restart the system.

If the system still remains inaccessibile, then there is an urgent need to use a third-party hard drive recovery tool to recover hard drive. These highly interactive tools are read-only in nature that use risk-free scanning algorithms.
