How to Make a Plain T-Shirt Stand Out in a Crowd - By: Jamie Simpson

It used to be that everybody wanted to fit in. That is no longer the case with today's generation. Everybody, from small children to adults are using fashion as a means to stand out from the crowd. So, what is a good way to make a basic t-shirt really stand out? There are many different ways to go about it!

Getting shirts custom printed is one way to make them really pop out in a crowd. It sounds pricey, but it is actually very cheap, particularly if you buy in bulk. Just buy a basic plain t-shirt and customise it yourself! Design a t-shirt with a funny saying on it, or with a picture of your favourite 80s band or television show. This way, the shirt itself pops because it is unique. The great thing about custom shirts is that you can put fun text on them or any images that you can dream up. They can be posters, they can be photographs, or they can be drawn up by yourself. There are also dozens of different necklines and different sleeve cuts to choose from. Make one long sleeved and one sleeveless. Make one scoop neck, and one crew neck. You have complete control when you are designing the shirt before it is made! Use this to your advantage.

As for making a regular t-shirt pop, there are many different ways to go about it. It sounds crazy, but a fitted suit vest (perhaps one with pinstripes) looks great over a V-neck white shirt. It gives it a hip, modern vibe. The clashing of the cheap t-shirt and the dressy vest, perhaps paired with some straight jeans and some leather boots is a very modern, urban look. A hat (maybe a fedora) can be added for extra impact. Also, try adding pins to it or a funky 80s inspired denim jacket. The possibilities are absolutely endless.

If you have a shirt that has simple patterns on it, you can even wear pants or an over-shirt that has a pattern on it. It sounds overkill, but as long as you keep it to no more than two patterns, and they are both fairly simple (nothing too busy) you will get a very 'notice me' effect. Use your good judgement though. If you hold two patterns up together and they obviously clash, do not attempt to make it work, try something simpler! But now, people don't seem to mind if things don't 'match'. So have fun with this concept. Try pairing bright colours with stripes, or geometric shapes with flowers. It sounds crazy, but with the right attitude it can actually look really cool and modern.

Cutting your shirts is another way to make them stand out. Buy a band t-shirt and cut some slits and holes in it. This is a very early 80s grunge-era look, but look around, even on the runways, a milder version of the 'gutter punk' look is back in style. Try cutting slices in your black t-shirt and wearing a bright coloured one underneath. Layering is always in style and can add extra edge to your look.
