You have probably read dozens if not hundreds of success stories on how to make money online. Success comes down to Website setup and traffic generation. Most people spend money and waste time in setting themselves up with websites that make little or no cash and the results are poor - that's because they haven't done their homework.

If you were going to open a bicycle shop you wouldn't open one on a highway a hundred miles from a main town or city. While you might get a lot of traffic, it won’t be the right type. What car driver wants to buy a bicycle in the middle of nowhere?

A Website is Important

You need your shop (this is your website) to attract visitors and a good quality of potential customers (traffic and quality). Getting a website can be difficult. You can use web set-up sites, but it isn't that easy if you are new to online business. Alternatively, you can pay a fortune to have a web design firm create one for you. That is not a route that beginners should take until they are confident that their business idea will work.

Another idea is to try some of the free website generation companies out there, but just be sure that they are ethical and honest and don't have a host of add ons and popup ads. I found a good free website from such a company and was up and running within 24 hours.

Your Website is up and running - now what?

You now have your free website but you need to get traffic. Keyword generation is the way to do this. Go to Google and search for the phrase "dog training" - I got over 45 million results. Now let's try "puppy dog shock collar", now it is down to 2 million - still high but a lot better than 45 million. This happens when you get more specific with your keywords.

That doesn't mean that the quality is good, only that there is less competition, and while the #1 listing on Google for a keyword may be getting 42% of the clicks, the fewer other web pages you have to compete with, and the higher the quality of the keywords and related content, the better the results for your website should be.

Website set up and traffic generation should not be a gamble. Don't be fooled into thinking that once you have set it up that money is going to fall into your lap. You are going to have to promote your website unless you have a lot of spare cash and can afford to pay someone to do it for you.

Blogging and Article Marketing

You will be doing just what I am doing right now if you want to make money online. Creating blogs and articles that advise people like yourself how to get started. You will not be able give your job up right away - I still work. However, if you have the desire and the patience then things will work for you.

To generate traffic you will need a good keyword generation tool. There are plenty of them around if you search for them. When choosing one, make sure that they offer keywords with high relevance, good traffic, lowish competition and high commercial value. I will cover these in future articles but if you want to get started then these are the golden rules.

There is no need for you to reinvent the wheel - just learn the basics and apply them well. Whatever you do, do it the best you can and make sure you have good keywords and a website with individual pages optimized for each of them.

Let's assume that you are interested in starting an online business to make money online. Firstly it takes effort, but you can speed it up by getting a good mentor and training. You will need a website that generates traffic and you will have to promote the website. If you haven't got a lot of money then things like blogs, article writing, social networking etc can all be used, and they will need to be or you are guaranteed to fail.

Keywords are the way to get good quality traffic through blogs etc. You can use SEO, but unless you know how to do it yourself this will cost money, and do Pay-per-Click ads that can also be expensive. However, once you start you will enjoy it.

There is a phrase that states "a blog a day keeps the job away" So get blogging. Get your website set up for you and get the traffic generation, and get a good mentor. Then you will make money online. Wherever life takes you be sure it is you who has decided the course.
