This is not a good time to be without electricity and heat. These are moments which living off the grid is a huge benefit. Not only are you protected but those in your area can have a place where they can be safe.

Winter isn't the only time that storms could happen. Hurricanes and tornadoes are a reality for many. In those cases it could be weeks that you are generally without power as towns and power sources are rebuilt. It could actually even be that you're cut off from civilization and left without communication for a long time of time. Had you been capable to go living off the power grid this might have been something that was avoided. She was totally confused.

I purchased a single solar panel that produced 12 volts at 2 amps. This I used to help charge a 12 volt car battery and I set 12 volt lights savings around. It's a start nevertheless it was not enough, I still had to run my little Honda generator to watch TV.

Previously affordable inverters produced 120 volts block wave AC but, TV's or stereos hate square wave current, they want normal 120 volt sine wave in any other case you have bars running in the picture and an awful hum inside sound.

This was not what I wanted so that i kept searching for some sort of sine wave inverter and I finally found a used the one that required 120 to one hundred forty volts DC input and produced 120 volts sine wave AC plus it was voltage regulated to boot. I was which has a 120 volt DC solar array to charge some sort of bank of batteries and converting the DC to AC which includes a expensive, back then, sine wave inverter to run the house. Since the house was out in "the sticks" We could only receive two TV stations and they were both weak together with snowy. So I made a decision to build a satellite TV system.

Since remember, the small dish satellite service didn't exist then but you may receive TV station programing if you had one of those large 12 to 14 foot C-Band satellite dishes. I was able for any 12 foot dish. Now I could watch TV in style!

An individual weekend I invited a friend of mine up to travel to and experience living heli-copter flight grid for himself. He brought a sizable pizza with him and I saw it a cold 6 load up waiting. That day a thunderstorm was brewing inside south when he turned up.

When showing him the solar panel array, your battery room (outside of the house) and answering questions precisely how it all worked it was time to go on the inside, heat the pizza inside microwave and turn in the TV to watch a Star Trek episode that was being downlinked to TV stations country wide.
