How to Keep Your Window Blinds Clean - By: Allan Michael Taylor

Dirty window blinds are not only ugly, but are also prone to premature damage. That's why it's important to get rid of dust and dirt that have accumulated on your blinds. Yes, it's much easier to neglect those window coverings for years, but regular cleaning is the only way to keep it looking good and working properly. You probably find cleaning the blinds a daunting task. However, there are several ways to make the job a lot easier.

The simplest way to clean your blinds is to use a cotton glove and white vinegar. Wear the gloves and dip the fingers in the vinegar. Then wipe out the dust on every slat of the blinds by running your fingers back and forth along both sides of the slat. When you're done with cleaning a few slats, remove the dust or dirt from the gloves and dip it again into the vinegar. Clean the remaining slats. Easy, isn't it? You can also use multi-purpose household cleaning products or warm water with soap to clean your window blinds.

You can also vacuum the blinds. All you have to do is mount a soft brush to the end of the hose of the vacuum cleaner and then vacuum the blinds carefully. While vacuuming the blinds, make sure to do so according to the direction of the blinds. So if you're cleaning vertical blinds, vacuum them in an up and down direction. Also, be sure not to press too hard on the blinds to prevent denting or breakage.

Blinds that have accumulated dust for a long time need more thorough cleaning. The best way to do this is to use a wet sponge or rag. The blinds should be detached from the window and taken outside your home for washing. You can hose down the blinds and leave them dry. Or you can clean them with warm water mixed with soap in the bathtub or kitchen sink. Soak the blinds in the tub for about 30 minutes, wipe them, and hang them to dry. Be careful not to scratch the tub or bend the blinds.

Similarly, blinds made of delicate materials require extra care when cleaning them. For instance, wood blinds are not washed with water because water may fade or warp the blinds. The best way to clean wood blinds is to use a wood cleaner and a cloth. Vacuuming wood blinds is also fine. For fabric window blinds, spot cleaning with detergent and warm water will do. Extremely dirty fabric blinds should be brought to a dry cleaner that specializes in cleaning window coverings.

It is recommended that blinds be cleaned at least twice a month to keep them from accumulating dirt. Cleaning window blinds isn't fun, but it is the best way to keep your window covering looking like new again. What's more, cleaning can make the blinds last longer since it prevents early damage. So what are you waiting for? Don't wait until your blinds get covered with dust—clean them now!
