How to Improvise Your Life a Little - By: Isabel Wiliams

As a single person you lead an exciting life, every week something new happens, and then when you start a family before you realize it you follow a simple routine of getting the kids out to school, going to work, running quick errands, making dinner, checking homework and going to bed, just to do it all over again the next day. Tuesdays are meatloaf nights and Thursdays are for takeout, and so your life loses the excitement and unpredictability. You may not be a fan of the unknown, but you can break with the routine in a somewhat organized, stress free way.

If you’re not looking for very big changes, you’ll still have to send the kids to school and go to work, but your free time is completely up for being rearranged. Start off with those dinners; for one, you can have each family member pick what’s to be on the menu for the next day; another option is to use a cookbook and either follow the recipes from A to Z or to just pick one up by chance; you can also switch roles and let the kids play chefs while adults only help out and make sure everybody is safe. That way your dinners will stop being boring, ad you’ll spend some more time together as a family when choosing and preparing the meal.

Homework needs to be done and checked, but you can try to include some fun into it. If your child is to prepare a speech, have them dress up and present it as if they were actors on a stage; if they’re learning state capitals, American presidents or multiplication table, take a ride on your fixed gear bikes and practice on the way instead of sitting at the table; and if they’re working on a project, let them use your graphics tablet or the video camera, help them figure out different functions and be supportive instead of criticizing. Find a way to make homework fun while educating, instead of it being boring and unpleasant.

When it comes to weekends, don’t let them be TV days with some house straightening added in for balance. Better get everybody out and play tourists around the city, go for a hike in the nearby hills, spend an active day at the beach or play some sports in the park. And if the weather or other circumstances make you stay home, declare the weekend or at least one day TV free and get to those house projects you’ve been putting away, read books, play board games. Make sure the other family members are staying away from TV and computer by asking them to come up with their own projects or presenting them with a really interesting book of their own.

A routine is a collection of small things that add up to be a cookie-cutter pattern in your household. To break out of it, you don’t need any giant steps, just small changes that will make each day different and will let you and your family develop new interests. So stop planning every minute of every day and let some improvisation in before you turn into a machine.
