How to Handle Separation Anxiety? - By: Juan dela Cruz

Separation anxiety is very common among toddlers, primarily those who are about to attend their classes for the first time. It is so usual that there are kids who are crying, whining and clinging to their parents during the first few schooling days. Expect this because they will be placed in a different environment with uncommon faces. Although it may be difficult for some parents not to provide their kid’s heart-wrenching wails, it is crucial that you make your toddlers realize that you cannot stay with them most of the time. So you might as well be interested to learn about the proper ways to handle separation anxiety and bring down the level of stress.

In the morning while eating your breakfast, for instance, pitch this kind of suggestion to your child.”I know you are such a big girl/boy that you will be fine in school while I go to the office”. Tell your kids about the reason why you need to do it and explain it clearly. Describe to your kids all the activities that they will be doing in school which involves their teacher. Always tell them that you will be going back and make sure to gain their trust. Remember do not leave your kid if you see some misbehavior reactions. This will just make your kid more fearful and clasp with you even more and you might not handle your child anxiety.

If you think that after doing all these preventive steps doesn’t take effect with your child and continue to clasp with you, keep in mind that the crying will only decrease once your kids learns the precious lesson that they can survive without you for few hours. Do not make complaint or punish your kids for clasping; thoroughly encourage them and reassure them instead. Embracing and holding your kids and telling them to go inside the classroom must be thoroughly. Of course, make sure that you are not the one having separation anxiety.
