A mattress is the most important component of any type of bed, regardless of its style or size. And if it is not cared for properly, then it will not last for as long as it should! Most new mattresses are intended to have a lifespan of around ten years, but this will only apply if they are looked after correctly.

The very first thing to be aware of is how to move your luxury mattress. Ideally, a mattress should only be carried around by two people and it should NEVER be folded across the middle! There will be a very delicate and precise arrangement of springs inside and these can easily become damaged if forced into unnatural positions. And this could result in a lumpy and uncomfortable bed for many years to come... You should also only use the handles on your mattress for positioning it on your bed. These are NOT intended for carrying and will frequently come off if used for this purpose!

Once that you have your mattress in place you will want to keep it in the best possible condition. Depending on its design, it may be necessary to turn and rotate it after a certain amount of time. However, some mattresses are specifically created to be ‘non-turn’ so make sure you check with the manufacturer’s instructions before you start flipping it over...

It is not advisable to sit for long periods of time with your weight on the edge of a mattress. If you do, then it may well cause permanent damage and result in a bed that sags on one side! Of course, all mattresses will be designed to hold a person’s body weight, but not in one concentrated spot!

The final factor to bear in mind when taking care of your mattress is moisture. Many of us will lose around half a pint (yes, half a pint!) in perspiration during the course of a single night, so keeping your bed well aired is absolutely crucial! When you get up in the morning it is advisable to fold the covers right back to the foot of your bed and leave them there for at least half an hour. To prevent any staining to your mattress it is also a good idea to cover it with a proper protective cotton pad. These are available from most good bed suppliers; they are easily washed and are a very worthwhile investment.
