There are budget airlines that do offer very cheap flights but before booking with one of them search the whole market as you can often find one of the bigger operators will offer a better deal when you take all costs involved into account such as in flights meals and entertainment. The rise of no frills airlines has meant that the big traditional carriers have had to be more competitive and this has partly been done through cheaper prices. If you are flexible with your flights and can travel at quieter times, naturally you find cheaper tickets; midweek is a better time to fly than at weekends and of course if you can avoid public and the school holidays where possible.

Thirdly there are last minute deals available especially as firms look to fill to capacity to maximise profits however as a rule the earlier you book the cheaper the flight will be especially to popular destinations with the budget airlines who will continue to hike their prices as they fill up and get closer to their departure date.

If you can be flexible with the airports that you are willing to travel from then you can often find a cheaper flight that will compensate you for the added inconvenience. Do work out the extra costs of both travelling to and from this other airport to your city to determine whether it is worth it.
