How to Follow Through and Succeed with Your Goals - By: Michelle Jayes

The beginning of a New Year is usually the time that people set their goals for the year ahead only to forget about them within a few days or weeks into the first month. What is the reason that so few people follow through on their goals and what can you do to make sure that it won't happen to you?

In this article we will discuss some points that can help you to stick to your goals and achieve what you desire in the year ahead.

1. The first thing that you need to do is sit down somewhere quiet and really think about what it is you want. Make sure that it is something you really want and not just something you think you should achieve because everyone else is doing it. Don't just follow the crowd you must feel a strong emotional commitment to the goal or goals you are setting.

2. Think about the things that you will need to give up in order to achieve your aims. You also need to consider the actions that you will have to take to get there. For example you may need to learn a new skill. This involves setting aside a certain amount of time every day for studying or practicing whatever it is that you are learning. This may mean cutting back on your TV time. Just remember that every benefit comes with a cost.

3. One of the main reasons that people fail to keep working at their goals is that they make too many at one time. By making a lot of goals all at once you are setting yourself up for failure as your thoughts will become scattered and you will feel overwhelmed. When it becomes too much to cope with the result will be to abandon everything, so rather start off with just one or two goals at a time and stick to them.

When setting your goals, be specific and keep track of how you progress. Set a goal with the end result that you wish to achieve and then go back and set a plan of action step by step how you wish to achieve it. Make it challenging but also achievable.

Write down your goals with a date by which you intend to have achieved them and exactly how you will get there. Once you have set up your plan of action and set your dates keep a record of each step along the path so that you can see how effectively you plan is working.

Each time you complete a step successfully, give yourself a reward. This helps to encourage and motivate you along the way to ultimate success. Write down what each reward will be along the path to your ultimate goal.

4. Tell people what your goals are and how you are going to achieve them. The reason for this is that the more people who know the more focused and determined you will be to get there.

5. Remember to also allow yourself a little bit of leeway both when planning and achieving your goals. Some flexibility is necessary as there are bound to be some times when you fall a bit behind. Don't beat yourself up about it, just reschedule your time to make up for the time that you lost as this way you will not start to become negative in thinking about being successful.

6. Initially put in some extra effort as this will help to establish a routine for you and get you into the habit of working regularly and diligently on your plan of action. Begin by aiming to achieve one or two of your short term goals in the first month or two which will make it much easier to keep going.

If after working regularly and diligently on your goals, you feel that you are not getting anywhere, then you will need to reassess the situation, see where you have gone wrong, learn from your mistakes and set a new schedule to work towards your ultimate goal.
