How to Find the best Trout Fishing Spots. Broadbill swordfish have been known to reach for a thousan - By: Vince Leblanc

Due to your popularity of trout fishing, not every stream is going to be a good place to help catch trout. Your best bet is to fish in a stored stream. Government and private organizations raise fish in hatcheries and release them into streams in which the public can catch these. There are some water ways with "wild" populations of trout - that is, those that are bred "naturally" not stocked from hatcheries - but they are generally subject to special regulations and limitations on offshore fishing to preserve the naturally reproducing trout population.

How can you tell if a stream is regularly stocked? The first is to check with the state agency that controls sea food stocking. Different states have different structures (for example, Pennsylvania has the Fish and Boat Commission, while in New York fishing is regulated with the Department of Environmental Conservation), so you will likely should do a Google search to find the proper channels.

Another method to figure this out is to review the fishing regulations of local streams. Often streams which were heavily stocked have more lax regulation with large creel limits, extended months or smaller size limitations. Fishing these streams will more than likely produce results.

Perhaps the easiest method to find out where the fish are may be to just drive around in the opening day of trout season and listen to where people are fishing. Just like a good restaurant, a good fishing hole may be crowded!

Since you've found a superior fishing stream, where are you going to fish when you get here? When I fish, I focus on three things: Banks, holes and big stuff inside water.

Fish can on occasion hide in holes along the bank - or even watched the show Hillbilly Handfishin'? Trout will hide being a catfish. These holes conceal them from predators and give them the element involving surprise when an naive nymph (or fishing lure) drifts by. When fishing the traditional bank, try to cast as in close proximity to land as possible without hitting your budget. This can be especially tricky if there are actually low-hanging branches out on the water - so don't forget to have a few spare lures in your pocket just in case you lose one in some sort of tree!

Holes are a place of deeper water that can give fish some break from the current. Usually as the mineral water gets deeper, the current slows and also the fish have to use less energy in which to stay place. This is also an area where debris and insects might settle or get, so fish are more likely feeding here. I like to work holes collected from one of end to the other so that the fish aren't startled by the splash of a lure or suddenly lose their appetite once they see a member of its school start thrashing after being hooked.

Like holes, big stuff in the water provides an area in which the current slows (even though briefly) and debris and insects might gather. Be sure to work both upstream and downstream side in the object, whether it's a fallen tree, a big rock or an existing truck tire, trout can be hiding on either side (or underneath).

Lastly, when you're at the stream, don't waste your time with fish you can see.
