How to Find the Best Movers in Los Angeles - By: Chris Robertson

My mother, who is 90 years old, lives in a Los Angeles neighborhood. She is getting ready to move from the home she's lived in for 35 years to a retirement home. My brother and sister and I have been helping her with all the details and preparations. We're trying to keep the process as simple and calm as possible, but there' so much to do it's hard not to get stressed out.

That's why we're looking for reputable professionals to help with all aspects of the move. My brother is searching for the best realtor to sell her house. My sister is negotiating every last detail with the manager of the retirement community. My job is to find a really good Los Angeles moving company, and I'll tell you, that's not an easy job. Well, of course, there are plenty of movers in Los Angeles; I see their names in the yellow pages. The challenge is to find one that will be extremely careful and responsible. That's not so easy.

I did some research and made a list of what to look for in a moving company. Here's my list:

* Insured and bonded
* Experienced, professionally trainer movers
* Clean trucks
* Emphasis on customer service and satisfaction
* Competitive pricing
* Local moving company. Locally owned and operated
* Polite and courteous movers
* Local references
* No hidden costs

My mother has valuable antiques and precious personal heirlooms. Her possessions are very important to her and she has always taken excellent care of them. Pieces of furniture she has had for over 50 years have no scratches or other damage. Most of her furniture is solid mahogany and very heavy. Her collection of ceramic figurines gives her great pleasure.

I want my mother to walk into her new home and find her furniture and other belongings placed exactly where she wants them and in perfect condition. It's not easy to uproot yourself and leave your familiar surroundings behind when you are 90 years old. It can be frightening to enter a whole new phase of life. This transition must be seamless, because I do not want the actual physical move to add to the stress of the change.

So, in addition to that list above, I'm looking for Los Angeles movers who have the strength of oxen, the patience of saints, and the gentleness of fawns. I want movers who will talk with my mother before they move a box and listen to her concerns. I want movers who will smile and say, "Yes, ma'am," when she reminds them (again) to be careful. I expect movers to lift and carry boxes and furniture without hurting my mother's belongings or themselves.

Am I being unreasonable? Are my expectations too high? I don't think so. It's for my mother and, believe me, I will find the best for her. I'm sure there are LA movers who can transport my mother's belongings carefully and respectfully, as she deserves. If they're out there, I will find them.
