How to Fight Stress Headaches - By: Kathy Jenkins

If you are a frequent sufferer of stress headaches, you are probably anxious to find a cure. For the most part, the easiest way to find a cure is to look to your lifestyle and figure out if you can make any positive changes that will reduce the amount of stress that you have to deal with. It's possible to ease the pain with a plain pain reliever but if you get the headaches a lot, this isn't a good permanent solution. In this article we will talk about a few good remedies for your stress headaches.

Ice packs can be a great way to lessen a stress headache. A good simple ice pack is a towel wrapped around a bag filled with ice or even around a bag of frozen veggies. Lie down with it and try to relax as every few minutes you move it from the top of your head to the back of your neck to your forehead. Where ever you feel the most pain is the spot that should get the most time with the ice pack. Ice will reduce the inflammation which, in turn, reduces the amount of pain you feel. While this won't cure the cause of your tension headaches it can offer some quick and temporary relief. Tension headaches can be caused by tightness around your jaw. Lots of people fail to realize that they are clenching their jaw when they feel tense and that can result in a bunch of different problems including headaches. In extreme situations, you can wind up with TMJ where any movements you make with your jaw are painful. When this happens (and it happens every once in a while) you need to see your doctor or dentist. Of course, even if you don't suffer from TMJ, a tight jaw could be causing your stress headaches. The very best remedy for this particular problem is to recognize your jaw tension and make a conscious effort to relax the muscles. Another good thing to do is to put a pen, pencil or something similar between your teeth. You don't want to actually bite down on it, but it will keep you reminded to release any tension in the area.

The things you eat and drink can sometimes cause headaches but not a lot of people are able to make this connection. The things you think are tension headaches can sometimes be caused by allergies and food sensitivities. Lots of people find that alcohol, even in little doses, can cause headaches. Another common cause of headaches is caffeine, especially if you drink a lot of soda, tea, coffee or energy drinks during the day. Reducing your caffeine intake is typically the best way to get rid of these headaches. Some people get headaches from consuming other kinds of foods too like cheese, chocolate, peanuts and peanut butter--anything you might have a sensitivity to. Try to find out if there is a connection between your headaches and anything you've eaten or drunk. To sum up, stress headaches are very common and can be caused by many things like not getting enough sleep, drinking too much or even just simple stress. You need to be able to properly identify the source of your headaches and address them, even when it means making changes that you might find inconvenient. You don't want to have to live with headaches all the time so make sure that you do what you can to make them stop.
