To cope with the fast-paced lifestyle of most people nowadays, gadgets are made as small and portable as possible. IPods have replaced Discmans, cell phones have become slimmer and lighter, and laptops have superseded computers as a more staple commodity. Since laptops are widely used, manufacturers have thought it best to further empower such devices in terms of speed, performance and appearance. However, while laptops are sought after its portability, they¡¯ve also been disliked for some limitations attributed to their size. The small data storage space is primarily frowned on and it¡¯s every laptop owner¡¯s wish for a practical way to expand it. Read on to find out how it can be granted.

There is a wide assortment of laptops in the market today with different storage capacities. Some models even have larger data space than some desktops but since the latter are easily expandable, the former would still seem to be on the losing end. Unlike desktops which allow for installing additional drives such as CD and DVD ROM drives, laptops only have a single internal hard disk drive. Manufacturers are well aware of the predicament of their patrons and so, they have developed a smart accessory: an external removable hard disk.

The external hard disk is mainly developed for secondary storage of data. It can also be used for other purposes such as backup of files, data recovery, and disk cloning. Consumers easily loved this device because it¡¯s convenient to use. All you have to do is just plug it into your notebook using a USB cable. In addition, because it¡¯s light and pocket-sized, it won¡¯t ever be a nuisance for you to carry. With an external hard disk, you can add as much as 6 Terabytes of storage space!

If you¡¯re not very fond of accessories, you can always opt to change your laptop¡¯s internal hard drive with another of higher disk space. To do this, you simply remove the panel on the back and replace the old drive with the new one.

In the meantime, you may also free up some space through other methods. One is to use a free, downloadable application like CCleaner, which deletes temporary files. Another is to uninstall programs which you deem unnecessary and as much as possible, choose programs that eat up a smaller space. Furthermore, you may need to transfer some files and documents to a CD/DVD, most especially audio and video files. That way, you¡¯ll be saving up on a lot of space and you won¡¯t need to expand it that much.
