How to Decorate your Kitchen with Glass Tiles - By: Xavier Diaz

Historically, ceramic tiles have been the design choice to use in kitchens because of their durability and ease of cleaning. This can lead to your kitchen having a very sanitary feel and lacking warmth, you can also struggle for colours and textures that are ideal for kitchen surfaces. As glass tiles become a little bit less expensive and well varied in the size and styles available, these types of tile are becoming more popular as a kitchen tile and not just for swimming pools or bathrooms. Latest kitchen decoration is moving to glass tiles and here are some suggestions on how to get the most out of glass tiles.

Research tile designs and the feel
This is pretty basic advice, but make sure you research the types of tile you want to use. You can create different feels to a room by the types and colour of tiles you use. Think about the feel you want in the room; countries, modern or contemporary are just some of the styles you could use. Whilst researching the style, pay close attention to the colours you use as well, using the right colours can really make or break your design. Get a sample of the tiles wherever possible.

Think where your tiles are going
Think about where you will be using the tile, is it going to be purely decorative or will it be in use each day. This should be a key factor in the type of glass tile you use for certain areas of your kitchen; the ambience you create will be affected by this choice.

Splashback for decoration
One of the best features you can do with a glass tiles, is to create a stunning splashback. Using a glass tile for this part of the kitchen design alone will create real impact. Use a smooth surfaced glass tile as this will make them easy to clean. Furthermore they have the benefit of being heat resistant whilst creating real impact.

Window Borders
Glass tiles can be used to create stunning borders and accent pieces, one of the best uses I have seen recently has been using glass tiles to tile around kitchen windows. This creates real impact and is a great design touch, if you only use glass tiles as a border and accent pieces I recommend you try this, it looks fantastic.

Create a feature piece
Try to create a feature piece in your kitchen, we all have areas in the kitchen at the side of washing machines or where you would normally adorn the wall with a spice rack! With a few well places colour accents and varying sized tiles you can create a conversation piece in the kitchen. Breakfast bars and wall separators work really well for this touch.

Tile your island
If you are lucky enough to have an island in your kitchen, this is a key design feature that you can use glass tiles to accentuate the island. This is a great design touch especially if you use textures and larger tiles. Think about using glass tiles on the surface as opposed to traditional wooden surfaces.

You will find that using glass tiles can really add some depth to your kitchen and really bring it out from a dull sanitised environment to a vibrant room. Hope that this article gave you some new ideas, good luck with your next project.
