So you have chosen to education your kids at home. Excellent for you! Kids who gain their education in the comforts of their home have proven to have better results on tests and with their grades, do better in college and among the work force. Families that home school are more bonded than those that don't. Aside from your rationale for putting your children through home school, have you thought about the kind of curriculum you want to follow? Have you conducted your research about the choices and approaches that you can use? Picking out a curriculum for homeschooling doesn't have to be an overly complex task. If you conduct some research, you should be able to formulate a curriculum that is beneficial to you and your children. Here are some things you can contemplate.

There are federal regulations that govern K-12 education and you need to understand them before buying lesson plans or enrolling your kids in online classes. Most of the regulations are governed by your state but you do need to know the federal rules, as well.

Your curriculum needs to meet the requirements that are currently being used which means you need to know and understand them, as well. Contact your local board of education or the Department of Education to learn more about these rules and regulations.

Your kids are still required to take the standardized tests sent out by the government and state even if you're homeschooling them. These tests are administered on days set aside for that specific reason every year at brick and mortar schools. Your local school board will be able to tell you if you can proctor these exams at home or if your children will need to take them in a "traditional classroom". Some areas, set aside specific days where all the homeschooled kids are required to come in to take these tests.

Your best resource for figuring out how to handle the yearly standardized tests your kids have to take is your local school board.

Of course, you are not always limited to one particular style of homeschooling curriculum. Blending different plans and styles has proven useful for many parents. Remember: children are versatile creatures: what works for one subject might not work for another. So many people worry that homeschooling will be difficult because they can't imagine keeping their kids interested in a single curriculum. Mixing curriculums will allow you to keep your kids interested and educated. Most kids have unique learning styles and will enjoy the variety in your curriculum.

You may choose to homeschool your kids for any number of reasons. Perhaps you don't like your local public schools. Perhaps you don't have the money for private school tuition. Or perhaps you've researched homeschooling and found that kids that are homeschooled do better later in life. But no matter why you've decided to homeschool, make sure that you are getting a good curriculum. Choosing the right curriculum is very important. Learn all that you can to ensure you are choosing the right one for you and your family.
