How to Cover the Edges and Back of your Bamboo Shades with Cloth - By: Allan Michael Taylor

If you find that your bamboo shades let in too much light or the edges are too raw and unfinished, you can actually have an upholsterer help you amend this. You can have a thick cloth liner attached to your window shades and have the ends finished with the use of edging tape or cloth as well. If you find that some upholsterers make you pay a lot for something so simple or if you feel that you can easily do it yourself, here are some instructions on how you can do this.

First, you will need to measure your bamboo shades and purchase the cloth liner you will be attaching to it according to these measurements. You will also have to purchase tape edges or cloth edges to attach to the raw sides of these window shades. When choosing the cloth for the liner of your shades, you might go for a solid, dark colored cloth to help keep more light out when you need to or you can opt for cloth that is in the same shade as your home décor's color palette. Once you've made your selection for your cloth liner, making sure that you buy the cloth larger than the measurements of your shades to give you the much needed extra cloth for hemming, you can then start your work.

- Lay the cloth lining you purchased on a flat surface, like your floor or your dining room table, and measure out your window shades' measurements on it.

- Once you have measured out the length and the width of your bamboo shades on your cloth liner, draw lines to show you just how big your shades are as compared to the cloth.

- If the cloth you have is too small for your shades, you will need to sew together two bolts of cloth before you measure out your shades on this piece of cloth.

- Once you've outlined the measurements of your window shades on the cloth, you will need to draw another line that is about an inch outside of this outline. This inch of cloth will be the folded part and the hemmed part of your cloth lining.

- Cut the cloth along the outside line and fold this line in twice, with the inner line as the last fold, and sew to make the hem.

- When you attach this cloth lining to your bamboo shades, first make sure that the side you are attaching this cloth to is free of dirt.

You can then attach the cloth liner to your shades using one of two methods - hand sewing with the use of a big needle and some knitting thread or by sticking this onto your window shades with the use of plastic glue up top and at the bottom. Since you will be securing the edges with the use of a hemmed strip of cloth or some edging tape, any of these two methods should work to keep your cloth liner attached to your bamboo shades no matter how many times you furl or unfurl it.
