How to Calm Your Mind - By: Tauqeer Hassan

When one feels nervous about something, it interferes in one’s way of facing the situation in a reasonable and logical way. Instead of getting the job done, it can divert the focus away from the things that require addressed or accomplished. One has to learn how to calm and relax the mind to reduce tensions and stress. Here are some different ways how this can be done.

Tip 1: Adopting a mantra
If a person has a tendency to let the mind wander away to other issues aside from productive thinking, a mantra can be adopted that will serve as a guide. It can be simple and short. For example, ‘Eye on the goal’ is a mantra that helps to focus on the goal and thoughts can be eliminated that will not help to finish the job and maintain a calm look.

Tip 2: Try meditation
Meditation is continuously practiced and perfected by a lot of people. This can be performed by managing a time period when a quiet pot can be found to sit down and clear the mind from thoughts. A mantra of choice can also be recited. Feel the silence and listen to your breathing. Doing it for the first time can feel a bit awkward but with the passage of time, one will get used to it.

Meditation also involves forgetting about the past and future, it focuses on the present. Feel the presence of yourself, your weight, your life and your feet on the surface. Breath and listen to the sound of nature around. Look at the surroundings. Listen to your senses. Hold on to the focus. Without jumping from one thing to the other, take in everything. When the mind wanders off during meditation, don’t force to return to the state of calmness. Switch your thoughts bringing back perfect balance and calm.

Tip 3: Assume a calming pose
Mind and body are strongly connected to each other. When a calming pose is assumed, a calmer state of mind will be reached.

Step 1: First, sit on your heels with the knees slightly pulled close together.

Step 2: Bend forward gently and slowly making the head touch the ground.

Step 3: Let our arms rest on both sides with palms facing in upward direction.

Step 4: Now, shut your eyes and hear your breathing to let the anxieties and tension finish.

Step 5: Slowly inhale and imagine softly pressing the belly against the thighs while breathing.

Step 6: Imaging stress getting out of the body and imagine complete calm.

Tip 4: Listen to soft music
One can always listen to calm music and sounds of nature. Choice of music can be uploaded that will help in staying calm. MP3 players and iPod are the best for this. So when anxieties will be approaching you, take some time off and indulge with the music. It will give a soothing effect in no time and will let one counter the problem in a calm way later on.
