How to Buy Inexpensive Rare Coins - By: Ariana Foxworthy

Many people are under the misconception that all rare coins will be extremely expensive. This is not strictly true. Since coins are graded and valued using more than one criterion, it is possible to get many ancient coins at a reasonable price. If you understand how coins are priced, you can use this information to obtain rare coins that may add to your collection, but may not be a high priority of other collectors.

Coins are graded by a number of different elements.

Grading – Coins are graded by the condition that they are in. A "mint" or virtually untouched coin will be far more valuable than one which has been passed through numerous hands and is showing signs of damage. Scratches and nicks will lower the price of a coin.

There are a number of companies, which specialize in grading. If you want to get a fair assessment of a coin before you buy or sell, you must have it graded by a recognized firm. You should never buy any coin online or anywhere else that has not been assessed by a qualified company. Failure to do this could cost you a great deal of money.

Mintage – This term relates to the number of coins that were produced. Many countries only mint a particular coin for a year. When the year ends, the coin “dies”. This means that there is a limited amount of that coin on the market. Unless a coin is re-stuck, there will never be any more. The fewer coins available, the more valuable they become.

Demand – In order to have any value, somebody has to want the item. The more people looking to buy a particular coin, the greater its value will be. An extremely rare coin may be purchased at a very low price simply because there are few people interested in obtaining it.

Age – In general, the older a coin is, the greater its value. Coins which are hundreds of years-old will in most cases be worth more than a coin that was minted within the last decade.

Error Struck Coins – During the minting process, mistakes can be made. A coin could be double struck, or it could be struck off center. Since this does not happen frequently, coins which are considered to be mistakes are very rare. This type of coin and collecting is rapidly gaining in popularity.

The Material – This criterion deals with the metal from which the coins are made. If you were to take the coin and melt it, what would be its value? From this viewpoint, gold is worth more than silver and silver is more valuable than copper or nickel.

All of these elements go into determining the value of rare coins. However, not all collectors base their collection solely on value. Countless collectors may be interested in only one or two of these criterions. Alternatively, there are coin collectors who are not interested in any of these things. They may be interested in basing their collection the coin’s country of origin. For example, a collector may only want coins that come from Italy or those which come from Spain. Or a collector may only be interested in coins, which feature a particular personage on the coin. They may be collecting coins with the picture of the Queen of England. They may be interested in obtaining coins from anywhere in the world, but only those which feature the queen.

As a collector interested in trying to obtain rare coins you should consider basing your collection on something other than value. If you do this, you will quickly learn that there are very rare coins available that may not be of much value to others but, which may be of value to you.

If you do decide that you want to base your collection on something other than value, you will learn quickly that rare coins can be obtained at reasonable prices.
