How to Avoid Fosamax Side Effects - By: Ronald K. Redman

Bisphosphonates are ordered in as many as 30 million prescriptions annually in the United States. One contributing factor is a bisphosphonate that can relieve pain due to bone metastases of prostate cancer, however, a more significant contributor is Fosamax, which is also a bisphosphonate, that is used to prevent or treat osteoporosis. Since Fosamax is consumed by a huge population, spreading awareness of preventing Fosamax side effects is of utmost importance.

As disclosed by Merck & Co., the company which patented Fosamax, the said drug may yield these severe side effects:

* Esophageal problems

* Lower than normal levels of calcium in the blood (hypocalcemia)

* Serious musculoskeletal pain

* Osteonecrosis of the jaw bone

* Unusual fracture on the femur

So that the risk of suffering these undesirable effects is minimized, take note of these reminders when taking your Fosamax medication.

* Do not take a dose higher than what your physician has instructed

* Take the drug first thing in the morning when you wake up

* Always remember to take the drug in an upright position and with a full glass of tap water only, do not chew or suck oral forms of Fosamax

* For at least half an hour after ingesting the drug, never lie down or take any food, drink (except plain water) or medication

Additionally, it is best to hold your Fosamax medication and call your health care provider the moment you experience chest pain, new or aggravating heartburn, or trouble or pain during swallowing. This may indicate damage on your esophagus – the tube connecting your mouth to your stomach – which may include irritation, inflammation or ulcerations with possible bleeding.

Furthermore, inform your physician immediately if you develop hypocalcemia which may cause symptoms such as spasms, twitches or muscle cramps; or numbness or tingling in your fingers, toes or around your mouth. Most of the time, calcium and vitamin D supplements may be added on your therapy but only take these drugs if your doctor says so.

Uncommon cases of people sustaining a low-impact femur fracture resulting in long-term use have been reported. Thus, don’t forget to ask your doctor about the course of your therapy and your risk for such adverse reaction. In fact, some of these reports triggered the filing of class action Fosamax lawsuits against the pharmaceutical company Merck. Indeed there’s no question with the efficacy of Fosamax, however, taking the drug entails certain risk that’s why precautions should be maintained by the patronizers of the drug.
