How the Right Domain Registration Increases Your Web Presence - By: Allan Michael Taylor

If you are building a website, you must get it right starting with your domain name. The right domain registration is crucial in increasing your online presence. There are guides you can follow in registering your domain name.

You must understand that your domain name is your identity- your name and your address online. It is comparable to your physical name and address where people will be identify you and know to look for you online.

Domain registration, meanwhile, is the process by which you obtain and register your website's domain name for your exclusive use on a designated period of time. If you have registered your domain name, no other person, company, or entity can use it for the duration of your registration.

How to Choose the Right Domain Name

Prior to registration, you must ensure that you have created a domain name of your preference and by which people can easily remember and search for you online. Your domain should be uniquely yours and must reflect the nature of your business.

Of course you have all the freedom to select as to what domain name you would like to assign to your website. You can choose from alphanumeric (letters and numbers) characters and may include hyphen.

at least two (2) characters and up to 67 characters, in lower or upper case or a combination of both, are required. If you choose to include a hyphen it should be located in between the alphanumeric characters, never at the beginning or the end of your domain name.

How to Register Your Domain Name

When you have created your preferred domain name, you have to find a domain name registration service or a web hosting service. Usually a web hosting service will handle your domain registration so you do not have to do this separately. However, you may also wish to register your domain on your own.

Whichever is your choice, the availability of your domain name will be checked. If your preferred domain name is available, registration continues. If not, you will be given a number of suggestions from which you can select your preferred name. You can also think and create a new one for your website.

After you have registered your domain name, you should be able to direct it to the server of your web hosting company. This step is bypassed when your web hosting company takes care of your website's domain registration.

Once the registration is completed, and you have your website operational, people can now easily find you on the web through your domain name.

Domain registration is probably the most important step in starting your online presence. It can determine the accessibility of your website and how well people will remember your business online. There are times when people seize a business by its domain name.

Following the correct process in registering, your domain name ensures that the domain is exclusively yours and from which you can enjoy a multitude of website visitors.
