How recycling your phone can help people the other side of the world - By: Felicity Lightbody

You've just bought a new mobile phone - what are you going to do next? RECYCLE THE OLD ONE!!

Why recycle old phones? Who would want an old mobile phone? Actually, plenty of companies want those old mobile phones. By recycling our outdated, faulty or otherwise obsolete mobile phone, we can help the environment. By recycling responsibly, we can help everyone throughout the world.

The number one rule for discarding our older phones is DO NOT THROW IT IN THE BIN.

Mobile phones contain many toxins such as lead, mercury, cadmium and arsenic as well as others. We do not need those in landfills or incinerated - polluting the soil, air and water supplies.

However, as we obey that rule of not throwing it away, we can find ourselves with one, two or more mobile phones collecting dust on a shelf or in a drawer. Those phones aren't helping us and certainly are not helping anyone else. The only good thing about those phones is that they aren't in a landfill harming the environment.

Many times, these mobile phones are in good working order and were upgraded to another phone with other features which we desired. There's nothing really wrong with those mobile phones except they're not the current model. Many mobile phone companies offer free phones when signing up for service. Of course when we're offered the latest technology, we'll accept these phones without thinking about what we should do with our current phone.

Is it possible to dispose of those mobile phones? Yes! During this time of being green - recycling is the logical solution. It is possible to donate the unwanted mobile phones to charities or nonprofit agencies which collect and recycle phones to raise funds. If the phone is a newer model, it is possible to recycle the phone and earn money for it. With just a small amount of time spent searching on a mobile phone price comparison website for example, we can find a list of recycling companies who will give us a certain amount of money for the mobile phone.

Before recycling any mobile phone, it is important to make sure that the service has been deactivated and that we remove old data on the phone, such as images, videos text messages etc.

What happens to our old phones? The phones which are in working condition, can simply be used by others. The nonworking phones can be fixed or cannibalized to fix other phones and then used for others. These are usually shipped to developing countries. The parts of the phones which cannot be cannibalized for repairs will need to be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner so that it will not have an impact upon the environment.

Reusing all the usable components and recycling the metals lowers the need for new raw materials. Not only does this lower the impact of the metal mining on the environment, it also lowers the amount of pollutants released into the atmosphere.
